Job description

  • Full time, 2 years fixed term, located on the Camperdown Campus
  • Exciting opportunity to join the leading physics department in the country
  • Base Salary $83,384 - $103,341 + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

The School of Physics is currently seeking an Photonics Instrument Scientist to work on novel photonic instrumentation for the detection of specific gas species at high sensitivity. The development of practical, working sensors for gases such as Methane whose monitoring and control forms a critical element in environmental policy will be of particular importance in this role.

The successful candidate will join the instrumentation and technology team working to develop and integrate the underlying photonic devices into a working, robust and field deployable sensor. Associated data flow and codes for analysis and interpretation of data to a level suitable for use in common field settings will also be developed.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • design and specify photonic components to build into integrated systems capable of performing high sensitivity and high specificity gas sensors
  • assemble and integrate components into optical testbeds, prototypes and eventually field-deployable instruments capable of performing novel measurements
  • develop software capable of controlling the instrument, managing data streams, and delivering data analytics for optimized sensitivity
  • conduct experimental campaigns that test and verify operation in laboratory and field settings, with interpretation of the outcomes within the setting of contemporary literature
  • co-supervise student research projects on related areas of science and technology
  • applicants will have a PhD or equivalent experience in Photonics and/or Physics, or an Engineering background with experience in electro-optical/photonic instrumentation and a proven record working on projects in a team environment
  • preference will be given to candidates with evidence for leadership of key research outcomes.

A campaign of testing and measurement will be conducted in optical testbed and field environments sufficient to verify operation and calibrate sensitivity. It is anticipated that the candidate will have a background in Physics, Optics, Photonics, or Mechanical/Mechatronic Engineering. A strong background optical instrumentation and opto-electronics with a record of leadership in delivering research outcomes in instrumentation is desirable.

About you

The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Photonics Instrument Scientist who has:

  • demonstrated experience with optical, opto-electronic or photonic instrumentation
  • a proven track record, as evidenced by published research or equivalent industry experience
  • demonstrated ability to conduct research and development in instrumentation
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • demonstrated ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team
  • demonstrated ability in scientific and numerical programming including data analytics and instrumentation software development.
