Role Summary
Applications are sought from suitability qualified sworn members wishing to be considered for the role of Inspector, situated in Central Command (Adelaide & Darwin).
The Policing (Band 8) role is that of a leader and key influencer. Successful applicants will possess relevant experience and subject matter expertise in operational policing, protection operations and/or operational specialist capabilities.
The ability to contribute to and influence the AFP's strategic direction, together with the ability to initiate, drive and manage change, is critical in this leadership role.
The Policing role is responsible for leading and managing people, outcomes and performance of their portfolio; building capability in line with corporate and enterprise objectives and strategies, actively seeking ways to improve the work of teams and to drive strategic priorities and organisational change.
The Policing role is required to build strong and diverse internal and external relationships, create a cooperative and collaborative team environment, and create a culture based on acceptance and respect to encourage diversity and inclusion. They are responsible for building and encouraging the capabilities of team members and team leaders, and create clear expectations of an ethical and professional environment. They are expected to mentor and guide members within their teams, encouraging and supporting them to develop and grow.
The Policing role is also expected to represent the AFP at a range of committees and forums, often at the National level.
Role Description & Responsibilities
The AFP works closely with a range of other law enforcement and government agencies at state, territory, Commonwealth and international levels to protect Australians and Australia's interests. As a leader within the AFP you will:

Essential Requirements
  • Demonstrate the core elements of the AFP Leadership Model.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage major incidents / events involving partner agencies, utilising command and control methodologies including Incident Command and Control System (ICCS).
  • Extensive working knowledge of relevant law, legislation and procedures.
  • Has contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and examples of effectively managing financial and human resources.
Eligibility
  • You must be an Australian Citizen at time of application.
  • 'Restricted Role' - requires the execution of police powers.
  • NV1 (Secret) security clearance; or ability to obtain one. Certain roles may require an NV2, or the ability to obtain one.
  • Currently hold the rank of Sergeant.
  • Use of Force (UoF) qualification; or ability to obtain full UoF qualification.

Advice for External Applicants
Applicants external to the AFP who have been found suitable at interview will be required to undergo various gateways to be deemed suitable. This includes:
  • Entry Physical Competency Assessment
  • Organisational Health Assessment (Medical/Psychological)
  • Ability to obtain a NV1 Security Clearance
  • Once engaged, successful external applicants must undertake a Lateral Police course as soon as one is available. This will involve relocating to Canberra for a 2-month course.
