Job description

  • The School of the Environment
  • An exciting opportunity to enhance your expertise and research profile in 3D laser scanning of forest structure using drone Remote Sensing.
  • Can be flexible with candidates who have experience with the C++ programming language and/or digital 3D object creation/manipulation (yet minimal Remote Sensing).
  • Collaborate with a highly capable team from The University of Queensland (UQ) and CSIRO collaborators.
  • Join a university ranked in the world's top 50
  • Based at our St Lucia Campus location

About UQ

As part of the UQ community, you'll have the opportunity to work alongside the brightest minds, who have joined us from all over the world, and within an environment where interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged.

At the core of our teaching remains our students, and their experience with us sets a foundation for success far beyond graduation. UQ has made a commitment to making education opportunities available for all Queenslanders, regardless of personal, financial, or geographical barriers.

As part of our commitment to excellence in research and professional practice in academic contexts, we are proud to provide our staff with access to world-class facilities and equipment, grant writing support, greater research funding opportunities, and other forms of staff support and development.

About This Opportunity

This is a compelling opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to advance their expertise in 3D laser scanning of forest structures through drone Remote Sensing. The project aims to develop automated methods for measuring and monitoring vegetation metrics across various scales, addressing a significant challenge in drone-based LiDAR processing capabilities. Working alongside a proficient team from The University of Queensland and CSIRO collaborators, you will contribute to algorithm development using data from TERN monitoring super-sites. Your role will involve building a data simulation environment for benchmarking Remote Sensing methods, overcoming limitations of real data alone. Developed methods will be used as a baseline for assessing the efficacy of biodiversity and nature repair market initiatives.

Additionally, you will play a key role in project management, ultimately delivering an operational workflow applicable to Australian vegetation communities for government and industry use.

Key Responsibilities will include:

Research

  • Produces quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in high quality outlets.
  • Work with colleagues in the development of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.
  • Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.
  • Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.
  • Supervision and Researcher Development
  • Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).
  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.

This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ's Criteria for Academic Performance.

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 2 years at Academic level A. The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range of $75,808.68 - $100,926.59, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $88,696.16 -- $118,084.11 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases - at least once a year.

The greater benefits of joining the UQ community are broad: from being part of a Group of Eight university, to recognition of prior service with other Australian universities, up to 26 weeks of paid parental leave, 17.5% annual leave loading, flexible working arrangements including hybrid on site/WFH options and flexible start/finish times, and genuine career progression opportunities via the academic promotions process.

About You

  • Completion or near completion of a PhD in Remote Sensing, Computer Science, Forestry, Physics, Geosciences, Environmental Sciences, Bio-Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Experience with the C++ programming language or other compiled languages is highly desirable.
  • Experience with operating Linux and command line computer interfaces is highly desirable.
  • Scientific Computing skills are highly desirable (e.g. processing large datasets on HPCs).
  • Experience with processing LiDAR point clouds or other 3D data is highly desirable.
  • Interest in 3D vegetation structure retrieval (e.g. aboveground biomass).
  • A good command of English, both written and oral.
  • Willingness to collaborate and be a team player with good communication skills.
  • Interested in developing their leadership skills and supervision of PhD students.
  • Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.
  • The ability to plan and perform research in a semi-independent or independent manner.
