Principal, Biofuels Strategy

About the role

Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.

We are looking for a Principal Advisor, Biofuels in Procurement, to contribute to a category that is undergoing a rapid transition towards renewable fuels in support of Rio's ambitious sustainability mandate. The core function of this role will be to support the assessment and execution of biofuel strategy. A background in finance/business analysis twinned with consulting experience is preferred. In Addition, the successful candidate will have strong communication skills, be able to distil complex concepts into concise messages, and be comfortable presenting to senior leaders.

Biofuels represent one of several sustainability pathways that play a central role in Rio Tinto's net zero 2050 ambition. The role will interface with a broad range of stakeholders within Rio Tinto, including operations managers, climate and community engagement teams, and communications while engaging with external partners and market participants.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Global Energy, you will:

Support the progression of the global biofuel strategy with associated capability in the following:

  • Financial skills: You will be responsible for maintaining financial models, developing an understanding of economic sensitivities associated with relevant input parameters, tracking costs, and determining economic value. Financial diagnostics is a key function of the role.
  • Consulting orientation: You will be responsible supporting decision-making by clearly articulating options, the pros/cons of different sustainability pathways and by stress-testing convention. A background in advisory/consulting would be well regarded.
  • Organisational skill: You will be involved in numerous initiatives and be juggling many different approaches and ways of solving problems. This requires a high degree of organisational ability, including understanding what is important and what is less so.
  • Communication: An ability to convey ideas clearly is critical to the role. This demands an ability to synthesise complex ideas. A strong understanding of the power of data visualisations in conveying information is required.
  • Global: This is a global role and coordinating with geographically dispersed teams to achieve outcomes will be critical.
  • Market Engagement: You will have a strong interest in global energy markets. You understand the commercial drivers and levers necessary to build value in a procurement context.

What you'll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • A strong commitment to safety, care, and collaboration
  • A passion for sustainability and the environment
  • A solid understanding of finance/accounting or related field
  • Consulting/advisory or related experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • A strong appreciation of the roles of business analysis, business evaluation and/or technical evaluation would be highly regarded
  • Advanced skills with the Windows environment (particularly data visualisation tools), including use of the MS Office suite of products
  • A history of working in a team environment on complex projects would be an asset
