About the role
We are looking for a Principal Advisor – Contracts to negotiate, formulate and administer multiple contracts across the RT Projects portfolio. This role is a great opportunity for an experienced contracts and/or legal professional who has effective stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills, as well as a sharp commercial awareness with a legal background. Ideal candidates might be a contract manager / junior to mid-level lawyer (or possibly a former lawyer) to support this special assignment.

Reporting to the Commercial Manager, Projects and working in a challenging and rewarding environment, you will:
- support key and complex special projects, providing commercial advice as part of the Framework Agreement delivery team;
- support Rio Tinto in negotiating and awarding key complex framework agreements relating to the procurement of engineering services for Projects and Studies;
- assist the delivery team in reporting through on consistency of commercial positions and escalating areas of concern;
- be able to identify material issues in tenderer positions for wider team discussion and consideration;
- be an experienced negotiator, mediator, problem solver and committed to driving positive contractual outcomes for the business;
- possess the qualities of excellent attention to detail and lateral thinking;
- adhere to the Company’s strict governance and compliance requirements;
- maximise commercial value for the business through leading contract negotiation and administration practices;
- collaborate with other support services to ensure streamlined processes and planning to ensure projects are set up for success;
- expedite commercial clarifications, taking the first-pass work on commercial and items;
- analyse and assess rate build-up, including statutory and non-statutory inclusions;
- prepare recommendations to award based on evaluation of tender submissions, commercial competitiveness and positioning;
- conform, prepare for approval and execution each agreement; and
- be responsible for:
- engagement with different teams and functions, including RT Legal, quality and engineering teams as we as senior leaders to seek endorsement of commercial positions;
- preparing, updating, obtaining RT legal endorsement and returning clarification registers across the board;
- handling tender responses and reviews;
- following up with legal recommendations; and
- general contract management / admin.
What you’ll bring
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your colleagues
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience in legal/contracts, with significant exposure to delivery of capital projects;
- Ability to successfully manage competing priorities in a fast-paced work environment
- A natural ability to build lasting relationships and engage with a wide range of stakehoders
- A tertiary qualification in a relevant field, and hands on experience supporting key and complex projects.
- Demonstrated ability to work within large multi-disciplinary teams to consistently outcomes and delivery of targets
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently as part of a small and dynamic team
