Join our Reef Compliance and Regulation team as a Principal Agricultural Officer (Environment).
Our team works with agricultural producers throughout Great Barrier Reef catchments to support the increased adoption of improved farm practice and reduce sediment and nutrient run-off to Reef waters.
Our approach is to engage with industry partners to drive the voluntary adoption of regulated farm practice standards, and to monitor and enforce compliance where voluntary adoption does not occur.
As part of a small dedicated and professional team, you will lead and motivate a small team of Agricultural Officers working in a regulatory capacity to conduct permit assessments and farm compliance inspections to ensure agricultural producers and advisors are meeting regulated practice standards for agricultural activities.
There is no typical day in this job and you will work with people across a range of agricultural commodities in the local area. You will be office-based to assess permit applications and review technical reports, and you will also lead regulatory activities at agricultural properties. Your work will contribute to solving complex environmental issues related to agricultural activities in your local area.
We are looking for someone with passion and drive, who is a natural problem-solver and excellent communicator and is comfortable having difficult conversations and resolving complex issues. You will need to demonstrate your capability to work with agricultural producers and understand the environmental issues within the agricultural sector, including application of ecologically sustainable agricultural practices.
You will be a skilled and motivated team player who values team culture and can work seamlessly with your team members, team managers and broader departmental staff. You will work closely with team members and share your experience and knowledge, and have capacity to mentor and train others, and build team capability.
You will ideally have worked in a regulatory capacity previously and able to demonstrate capability to rapidly acquire knowledge of the Environmental Protection Act 1994 and legislative frameworks and their implementation, as applied to the agricultural industry.
Are you a First Nations person? The department has designated this position as a First Nations Priority Consideration position.
Refer to the attached Position Description for more information on the role, who we are looking for and how to apply.
