The Opportunity

Council is currently seeking a motivated Principal Environmental Scientist/ Engineer to join our Infrastructure team. You will provide technical advice and support to the cross-section activities of engineering projects with a particular emphasis on roads and stormwater drainage management.

The Role will also develop strategic alliances with key, both internal and external to Council as well as other principal community, government and industry participants to assist in the delivery of the long-term project outcomes and relationships across the Shire.

It is expected that you could provide experience in everything from biodiversity surveys, contaminated site investigation and remediation, environmental impact assessments and environmental management and auditing, hydrology and hydrogeology, sediment and erosion control, monitoring of rivers and streams, European and Indigenous Cultural Assessments and ground water matters. You will be provided a range of opportunities to develop and diversify your skills as an Environmental Scientist/Engineer, with project field work available in interesting and varied locations across the whole Banana Shire.

The successful applicant will maintain project environmental and risk management functions from Council and support the Infrastructure Team in the preparation of environmental and cultural heritage approvals and assessments as they relate to the ongoing Capital and Funded Works programmes from year to year.

You will provide engineering advice to Council's Technical Services in relation to the development of Council’s Capital Works and Funded projects (roads, drainage, flooding, traffic etc.), including development proposals and designs where required.

You will support Council and the Community to navigate the complexities of its natural resource policy, planning, and regulations, whilst assisting in the delivery of some exciting key environmental projects.

The role will directly report to the Director of Infrastructure Services and will be based primarily in Biloela, Central Queensland.

Banana Shire is situated in Central Queensland, Australia, located 120 km west of the growing industrial city and port of Gladstone - and an easy drive to the city of Rockhampton.

Our population is approximately 15,000 people spread over 28,577 square kilometres. Major industries in the area include Coal Mining, Power Generation, Beef Production, dryland cropping and irrigation such as Lucerne and Cotton.

About You

Ideally our successful candidate will have

  • Ability to manage, plan, organise, coordinate, monitor and evaluate the environmental objectives for all engineering projects within Council’s Infrastructure capital works programme.
  • Sound knowledge of current legislation and Australian Standards relating to the Environment, Cultural Heritage and Local Government statutory obligations.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Protection Management Principles.
  • Be able to apply engineering knowledge to protect the environment during Council operations.
  • A practical-minded hands-on approach coupled with excellent communication and people skills
  • Possess a good understanding of, and commitment to, EEO and WHS principles and practices;
  • High level keyboard and computer skills
  • Understanding of and commitment to EEO and WHS principles and practices.

Eligibility requirements

  • Queensland C class drivers licence (minimum requirement – provisional licence).
  • Tertiary qualifications in Bachelor of Environmental Engineering or Bachelor of Environmenal Science or equivalent.
  • Queensland Construction White Card or Blue Card (General Safety Induction).

Highly desirable

  • Experience in Local Government
  • Registration or progression towards RPEQ would be highly regarded.
  • Certificate IV (or Higher) in Project Management would be highly regarded.
  • Relevant experience in Environmental and Risk Management Systems.
  • Knowledge of legislation (Acts and Regulations) relating to the Environment and Local Government
