About the Role

 

An exciting opportunity exists to join the Copper South Australia (CSA) Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Team in the role of Occupational Hygiene Principal, reporting to the Superintendent Asset Radiation and Occupational Hygiene. As a part of the asset team, you will be an instrumental player in supporting exposure reduction initiatives, as well as establishing and implementing aspects of the site hygiene management plans across Copper South Australia sites. You will identify and assess health risk and recommend controls. You will also advise on occupational hygiene, health & safety matters in the workplace that potentially impact human health from environmental and work-related sources.

 

This position will be working in BHP Adelaide office on a 5/2 Monday to Friday Roster with occasional site travel as required. 

In this role you will: 

  

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and subject matter advice to asset and line management, and external customers on key occupational hygiene impacts and regulatory requirements. 
  • Anticipate, identify, assess, recommend and verify controls on occupational hygiene hazards including dust, diesel particulates, organic vapours, noise, gases, thermal stress, asbestos, vibration and biological agents. 
  • Set strategic direction on occupational hygiene related initiatives or hygiene risk management. 
  • Accountable for reporting of occupational hygiene statistics and performance and ensuring quality of hygiene data. 
  • Recommend and support exposure control options and develop robust control strategies to reduce occupational exposure across CuSA sites. Be responsible for delivering hygiene improvement projects or initiatives to meet internal and external requirements. 
  • Ensure the success of our exposure reduction strategy by engaging and influencing senior leaders to progress hygiene business plan initiatives at our sites. 
  • Govern, maintain, and improve hygiene related standards, processes, systems and procedures. 
  • Implement real time monitoring (RTM) across sites.  
  • Oversee the occupational hygiene monitoring program as per the hygiene management plan. 
  • Manage unexpected hygiene events including hazard assessment and recommendation of immediate corrective actions to prevent exposure. 
  • Support the development of health exposure related training and awareness packages. 
  • Contribute to the development of Asset ROH team members and build hygiene capability in the wider HSE team and line workforce.

About You

 

This role will suit an experienced, self-motivated occ hygiene professional who is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our people to support a thriving workforce. To be successful in this role, you will have: 

 

  • An overriding commitment to BHP’s Charter Values 
  • Degree qualifications in Occupational Hygiene, Health Science, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or similar. 
  • Experience leading change and in delivering company-wide hygiene related initiatives or projects in mining or other similar industries. 
  • High level of technical and practical skills in Occupational Hygiene with strong experience in implementation of engineering controls to reduce exposure. 
  • Full AIOH Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) membership or equivalent from other countries with Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH) is preferred. 
  • Ability to engage, coach and influence multiple stakeholders at varying levels of the organisation on health-related initiatives or matters. 
  • Strong understanding of health and hygiene related legislation across Australia. 
  • Ability to work autonomously while also thrive in a collaborative team environment. 
  • Strong planning, organisational and time management skills
