Position Information

Arncliffe West Infants School, established in 1912, is located in the suburb of Turrella in Sydney's inner west. The urban renewal process has recently changed the suburb profile with a marked increase in high-rise residential developments.  

This rapidly changing landscape has created a diverse student population of 144 including the pre-school students with a multicultural mix. 96% of its students have a language background other than English with the predominant cultural groups being 68% Mongolian, 12% Arabic, 3% Russian and 3% Spanish.

As one of the few Infants Schools with an on-site preschool Arncliffe West Infants School is able to cater for students from Preschool to Year 2, offering focused foundational learning. The school offers extensive green space with outdoor opportunities for play and sporting activities, which is of particular value to those students living in high-rise homes. The school's motto 'Grow in Friendship' encapsulates the ethos of the school where mutual respect and compassion for others is valued.

The school’s Situational Analysis highlighted the absence of rigorous data for tracking school performance over the longer term. Tracking student outcomes against expected student growth targets was identified as the most meaningful measure of student, teacher and school performance.

The 2021-2024 Strategic Improvement Plan addresses the identified gaps by setting individualised expected student growth targets mapped to the learning progressions for reading, additive strategies and writing. Teachers track attainment using formative and summative assessments, analysing data collected to assess the impact of programming and teaching practices on student outcomes within a high expectations culture.

A highly visible and approachable leader who builds positive, authentic partnerships with all members of the school community to further develop a culture of high expectations and trust, inspiring and enabling all students, staff and community to contribute and achieve their best in a diverse and inclusive Pre-school to Year 2 educational environment.

Proven capacity to lead the implementation of the Strategic Improvement Plan, with a focus on reflective, evidence informed, evaluative practices to improve the learning and wellbeing outcomes for all students and build the capability of all staff.

Demonstrated strength in instructional leadership, leading improvement, innovation and change through a culture of collaboration and high impact professional learning focused on student growth and attainment.


General Selection Criteria

1. High level educational leadership with the skills to lead and manage a complex public school focused on the delivery of high quality education

2. Ability to lead and manage rigorous and inclusive whole school teaching and learning programs

3. High level communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build positive relationships and engage all levels of the school and educational community

4. Ability to lead and manage the development and performance of staff to improve teaching and learning

5. Ability to plan systems and manage resources effectively and equitably to enhance teaching and learning

6. Capacity to lead staff in implementing the Department's Aboriginal education policies and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.

The Crown Employees (Teachers in Schools and Related Employees) Salaries and Conditions Award 2020 details the new principal classification structure based on complexity of schools which commenced in 2016. The classification and remuneration of our school principals is based on school complexity, as measured through each school’s RAM allocation. As part of the ongoing application of the new structure a review of thresholds and outcomes will occur on an annual basis. The principal classification for this school is Principal Level P1 for 2023 and 2024.

Applicants are to include details of their WWCC clearance number as part of this application.
