NSW Privacy Commissioner
Promote and uphold privacy rights for the people of NSW
The NSW Government is seeking to appoint a dedicated leader to protect privacy rights in NSW.
The Privacy Commissioner is an independent statutory officer appointed under the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998. The Privacy Commissioner?s functions are set out in this Act and the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002. The Commissioner reports directly to the Parliament with oversight by the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
The Privacy Commissioner promotes public awareness of privacy, provides guidance and assistance to agencies on their legislative obligations, and investigates privacy related complaints. The Privacy Commissioner has wide-ranging oversight powers in protecting and advancing the public interest.
The ideal candidate will have:
· leadership and management experience at a senior executive level, and demonstrated capacity to act with integrity
· sound understanding of privacy legislation and issues
· substantial experience in complaint handling and/or dispute resolution functions
· ability to understand and respond to the challenges and opportunities presented by rapidly evolving technology and potential uses of data
· outstanding communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
The Privacy Commissioner may be appointed for a fixed term of up to 5 years that may be renewed. Probity checks will be conducted on the final candidates for the role.
