The NSW Government is seeking to appoint a dedicated leader to protect privacy rights in NSW.
The Privacy Commissioner is an independent statutory officer appointed under the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998. The Privacy Commissioner’s functions are set out in this Act and the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002. The Commissioner reports directly to the Parliament with oversight by the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
The Privacy Commissioner promotes public awareness of privacy, provides guidance and assistance to agencies on their legislative obligations, and investigates privacy related complaints. The Privacy Commissioner has wide-ranging oversight powers in protecting and advancing the public interest.
