Job description

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is seeking Senior Executive Band 1s (Program Managers) for four current vacancies and the creation of a merit pool for any future ABS SES Band 1 vacancies. 

Two of the vacancies are in the Economy and Environment Division: one in International Statistics Branch; and the other in Physical Environment Accounts and Statistics Branch. Both Program Manager roles have up to six direct reports and responsible for up to 90 staff. The roles have accountability for producing high-quality statistical products and insights, aligned to international standards.  

The third vacancy is in Census and Population Division, leading the 2026 Census Data Operations Branch. This role will have up to 10 direct reports and responsibility for up to 650 staff. The role works closely with the other Census Senior Executives to deliver a smooth-running Census that produces high quality data. This role has accountability for completing the development of the processes and systems to support quality monitoring, data capture, data coding, data processing and dissemination for the 2026 Census. The role is then responsible for Census data operations in 2026 and 2027. 

The fourth vacancy is in the Statistical Infrastructure Division, leading the Location Infrastructure Branch responsible for maintaining and evolving the location infrastructure used by range of internal and external stakeholders in the production of official Statistics and the provision of quality data services and insights. The role has four direct reports and responsibility for up to 90 staff. 

As an ABS Program Manager your key accountabilities will include:

  • developing/maintaining and overseeing a branch work program: branch work programs can vary from producing high quality statistical products and insights, delivering data linking and integration projects and/or managing a project or program of work e.g. the Census
  • managing the branch’s current and forward year budget, including improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the branch
  • developing and maintaining relations with key Commonwealth, State/Territory and non-government stakeholders
  • providing statistical and Data advice in response to stakeholder requests
  • engaging internationally (generally virtually) in the development and review of international statistical standards and guidance
  • demonstrating and promoting expected cultural behaviours (self-aware, customer-focused, collaborative, accountable, adaptable and innovative)
  • leading and inspiring staff to build engagement with ABS, deliver high performance and support employee wellbeing
  • supporting simplified and streamlined governance that enables transparent and responsive decision making and flexible resource allocation
  • contributing to and promoting ABS-wide initiatives beyond your specific branch work program e.g. diversity, innovation and capability building.

Additional essential criteria for some of the advertised vacancies:

For the two vacancies in the Economy and Environment Division:

  • knowledge and experience of producing economic and/or environmental statistics. 

For the vacancy in the Census and Population Division:

  • experience in delivery of complex programs and leadership of large operational teams
  • knowledge of social and/or population statistics.

[There are no additional criteria for the vacancy in the Statistical Infrastructure Division.]
