Provisional Fellow Anaesthesia, Regional Anaesthesia - Commencement February 2025

This is a temporary, full time position commencing February 2025 in a department well established in its scope of service with a sound reputation for providing skills and expertise in Regional Anaesthesia.

The successful applicant will work with a team of anaesthetists who have a wide variety of skills in subspecialty anaesthesia and have a particular interest in developing regional techniques and expertise within the department and their seconded trainees.  The department also has a strong focus on teaching and mentoring and attracts trainees from John Hunter Hospital, Royal North Shore Hospital and the QARTS training program. 

The Department of Anaesthesia provides anaesthetic services in a variety of environments – operating theatres, endoscopy (GI and bronchoscopy), radiology, psychiatry, and the Emergency Departments. The successful applicant will work across the Richmond Network of Ballina District Hospital, Lismore Base Hospital & Casino Memorial Hospital.  It provides analgesia services to the labour ward and runs a 7 days per week Acute Pain Service. It provides preoperative assessment and consultation in a dedicated Perioperative Clinic service, and also provides assistance when required with resuscitation and trauma management. 

There are more than 30 consultant anaesthetists in the department and each year there are 9 ANZCA trainees, two Provisional Fellows and at times trainees from other disciplines rotating through the anaesthetic department. The department is renowned for its regional anaesthesia services and skill set. 

This position is designed to develop & enhance skills in regional anaesthetic techniques as well as the use of regional anaesthesia in acute and chronic pain management. In addition, there is an expectation that the fellow will contribute to our simulation-based education program. 

Where you'll be working

The Richmond Network Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine is a lively and supportive team consisting of Staff Specialists and Visiting Medical Specialists.  The department has a national reputation for teaching of ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia.  The Richmond Network of clinical services spans a wide range of clinical specialties across the district.

About Richmond Medical Workforce (Lismore / Ballina / Casino)
Lismore Base Hospital is the recognized Trauma Centre for the North Coast Region and is linked with the local helicopter retrieval service.

Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is an acute referral hospital of 280 beds on the Far North Coast of NSW. It has recently undergone redevelopment and has a new and significantly expanded Emergency department, boasting modern facilities such as expanded Medical Imaging capacity, Streaming, Fast Track zone, ED Short Stay Unit (ED SSU), Resuscitation area and roof-top Helipad. 

The hospital has a busy 17 bed Emergency Department, 9 bed ICU and a 4 bed Coronary Care Unit.  A wide range of medical and surgical sub-specialties exist on campus. Lismore Base Hospital plays an important role in providing high level specialist services at a regional level including:

  • Access to a formalised Retrieval Service providing service over a 300km radius.
  • Specialist emergency and elective surgical services including Vascular and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery.
  • Renal Dialysis and Renal Dialysis home-based training.
  • Diagnostic and interventionist cardiology.
  • Adult Mental Health Unit.
  • Child & Adolescent Mental Health Unit.

LBH is an affiliated teaching hospital for medical students from the University of Newcastle, University of Sydney, University of Wollongong and University of Western Sydney. The hospital has a strong commitment to teaching and support for its Junior Medical Officers.

Our region encompasses World Heritage listed rainforests and the pristine beaches of Evans Head, Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay. This area is blessed by year-round sun, a tropical climate and a short winter.  From lush hinterland villages, to Mount Warning, national parks, and sparkling beaches, the region is full of natural wonders and vibrant destinations all within a short drive from Lismore.

What you'll be doing

The Provisional Fellow in Regional Anaesthesia and Simulation will provide safe and high quality Anaesthetic services to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in Anaesthesia practice, in a complex clinical environment within inpatient and outpatient areas in the public health organisation. Allowing the development of skills required for independent practice and the opportunity to acquire subspecialist experience in a variety of areas including regional anaesthesia and simulation. Non-clinical sessions are available for education, research, audit and administrative and leadership roles as appropriate.
 
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee's skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Consultant. All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
 
The Provisional Fellow in Anaesthesia is expected to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and skills, including:  
  • Anaesthesia and sedation
  • Regional anaesthesia
  • Simulation training and education
  • Airway management
  • Pain medicine
  • Perioperative medicine
  • Resuscitation
  • Trauma and crisis management.
Offering an excellent program and pathway for senior trainees to transition into consultant practice. Special emphasis is placed on developing clinical autonomy, organisational skills and administrative capabilities, including the supervision and education of junior trainees and medical students.

  2. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment
  3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the medical officer and other members of the healthcare team
  4. Demonstrated advanced written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team
  5. Demonstrated advanced organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment
  6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management
  7. Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education
  8. Availability and capacity to participate in a 24 hour/seven day rotating roster which includes working all shifts, all days of the week including public holidays and work between services and geographical locations to deliver patient care
