Summary:
The Psychiatric Technician is responsible for providing basic care to patients with mental or emotional disorders, administering medications, observing and reporting patient behavior, and helping patients engage in therapeutic activities. They work under the supervision of a psychiatrist and other mental health professionals.
Responsibilities:
- Provide basic care to patients, including bathing, grooming, feeding, and dressing
- Administer medications, such as oral and topical medication and injections, as prescribed by the psychiatrist
- Assist patients in developing their daily living skills and support them in engaging in therapeutic activities
- Observe and document patient behavior and report any significant changes to the treatment team
- Monitor patients' vital signs, such as blood pressure and pulse
- Help maintain a therapeutic milieu by keeping the environment clean and safe
- Respond to patient emergencies, such as suicide attempts, panic attacks, and behavioral outbursts
- Participate in treatment planning meetings and communicate with the treatment team
- Educate patients and their families about mental health conditions and treatment options
- Provide emotional support to patients and serve as an advocate for their needs
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a certified Psychiatric Technician training program
- Experience working in a mental health setting, preferred
- Basic understanding of mental health conditions and treatment approaches
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work as part of a team and take direction from supervisors
- Flexibility and willingness to work varying shifts, including weekends and holidays
- Physical fitness and ability to lift up to 50 pounds
