We collaborate to address diverse, complex, and emerging problems within the Public Health domains of environmental health, infectious disease, chronic disease, and emergency preparedness/response. Our support drives the adoption of emerging best practices and technologies to increase the usefulness and value of Public Health Data. Our team develops innovative data capture and analysis techniques in the field to enhance emergency response efforts all around the world.Job SummaryThe Public Health Data Visualization Specialist works directly with Public Health professionals, analysts, and developers to create and publish Data Visualizations. These visualizations products will provide additional insight for geospatial and Public Health analyses. The Specialist will use a variety of tools to create sophisticated and publication-ready graphs, tables, charts, and other visualizations.Responsibilities
- Participate in the planning, development, and revision of Data Visualizations.
- Participate in meetings and contributes to technical design, reports, and other feedback mechanisms as appropriate.
- Translate requirements and analyses from Public Health scientists and program leadership into visualizations.
- Recommend the best use of color, text, and graphics to achieve the communication objective.
- Design graphics, charts, and tables based on best practices, user research data, and knowledge gained from research; adhere to established design and branding guidelines.
- Creates quantitative data products such as dashboards, charts, and diagrams, using tools such as, Tableau, Python visualization packages (e.g. matplotlib, seaborn), and Kibana.
- Ensure visualizations are accurate, consistent, current, and organized in a manner suitable to their target audiences.
- Conduct work in an agile manner with regular status updates on progress and blockers.
- Research and recommend improvements to existing visualizations for improved education, engagement, and outreach.
- Completes tasks on time with minimal supervision but supports collaboration across teams.
- Must have or be able to obtain a Public Trust with the US federal government
- At least three years’ experience in data-focused roles
- Familiarity with best practices for accessibility following Section 508-compliance, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, digital first, and plain language
- Experience with data files (.xlsx, .csv, .tsv, etc.), Microsoft Excel, SQL Server, Adobe Photoshop, and data tools such as R, SAS, Tableau, and/or Qlik
- Ability to update and manipulate graphics for web publication
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Experience using SAS, R, or SQL in data projects
- Experience with Public Health aggregated estimate data
- Knowledge of Public Health Data and related privacy requirements (HIPAA, PII, etc.)
- Recent experience with HHS data to include the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) environment and standards: SDLC, technical architecture, release processes
- Experience with Agile and DevOps methodologies
- Degree(s) in Data Science, Computer Science, Public Health, Graphic Design, or related field
