Our growing team is passionate about active land management, and we are focused on finding economically viable solutions to maximise our impact on climate change. 

We are one of Australia’s largest and most experienced carbon farming project developers. This includes more than 160 projects with farmers, plantation managers, agribusiness, and Indigenous groups on carbon farming projects.

Climate Friendly has delivered over 30Mt in carbon abatement as at the end of 2023. Our immediate mission is to establish partnerships, by 2025, that will store or reduce 150Mt of CO2-e, while repairing nature and supporting reconciliation. The role

As Python Developer, you will be joining us on an initial 12-month contract and be responsible for:

• developing Python notebooks, scripts, and maintaining code repositories associated with spatial workflows for data production, analysis, and management
• migrating scripts where appropriate from other languages (primarily VBScript)
• writing plugins for QGIS Desktop
• documenting data processes and workflow dependencies

Key responsibilities include:

• Developing and maintaining Python code to enhance GIS workflows for desktop and cloud/server environments
• Maintaining and consolidating existing internal code repositories in Github
• Identifying gaps or inefficiencies in current processes or workflows and planning and executing development projects for improving production outcomes
• Assisting other team members to prioritise, review and share development tasks
• Keeping up with the latest technology, trends and best practice in the geospatial industry and applying this knowledge as applicable to Climate Friendly
• Improving geospatial processes in line with Climate Friendly’s requirements, including providing support and mentorship to other technical staff

About you

Essential:

• Relevant tertiary qualifications related to Geographic Information Systems, data science or software engineering
• 3-5 years' industry/relevant experience
• Python programming using associated spatial libraries (for example GeoPandas, Shapely, Rasterio, NumPy, SciPy, LasPy) underpinned by a strong understanding of core Python functions and libraries
• Python plugin development in QGIS (experience with PyQGIS)
• Interacting with cloud data storage for raster and vector data, and preferably also point clouds
• Working with processor and I/O intensive data layers: vector, raster and point clouds
• Familiarity with PostGIS spatial functions and applied SQL knowledge
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment
• Experience maintaining processes (code/scripts) using source/version control (Git/GitHub)
• Excellent communication and high-level analytical / problem solving skills

Desirable:

• CI/CD experience
• Interactive development in JupyterLab
• Script orchestration
• Experience with WebGIS libraries (e.g. Leaflet/Openlayers) and/or WebGIS servers (QGIS Server, Geoserver)
• Experience with R spatial functions or equivalent Python libraries in an R environment
