Project Overview

The New Intercity Fleet (NIF) Project is being delivered by Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) to provide a fleet of new intercity trains for operation on the New South Wales (NSW) electrified rail network. The rail-car fleet will comprise of 55 Long Units and 69 Short Units for the Newcastle, Blue Mountains, South Coast and Central Coast lines.

The NIF high-capacity, double-deck walk-through trains to be delivered by RailConnect NSW will be configured as four, six, eight (2x4) and ten car trains (4+6). The trains will offer passenger comfort and amenities suitable for longer journeys, such as comfortable seating, advanced communications technology and toilets.

RailConnect NSW is a consortium comprising Hyundai Rotem Company (HRC), UGL Rail Services Pty Ltd (UGL) and Mitsubishi Electric Australia Pty Ltd (MEA).

Role Overview
To support the T&C Manager in delivering safe, efficient and successful testing and commissioning outcomes in NSW. 

To ensure that modifications and train readiness activities are efficiently implemented on Train Sets, safely, and in accordance with the defined quality standards.

To ensure that the configuration of the Train Sets is accurately maintained within the HRC systems to support the safe and successful introduction of the NIF trains. 

The role works closely with Planning and Engineering to ensure train quality standards and readiness requirements are met in accordance with project requirements in partnership with the key stakeholder such as TfNSW and NSW Trains and RailConnect consortium partners.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Lead rectification of QC defects (SNAGs) raised in KOR and SYD
  • Liaise with planning team to plan QC Train Readiness Activities
  • Responsible for on-floor train readiness activities completion, including pre-handover quality inspections as per Provisional Acceptance project requirements
  • Plan and Lead Interim Final Acceptance SNAG MD Rectifications.
  • Work collaboratively with the Project Management team to ensure QC Unit Acceptance criteria are met prior to unit presentation for Provisional Acceptance
  • Be the PIC to ensure QC and Configuration baseline requirements are satisfied prior to major asset handover milestones (PA/IFA)
  • Responsible for design/plan/execute QC Gate inspections during the ongoing trainset-level modifications
  • Implement continuous improvement principles to improve QC train readiness process
  • Work collaboratively with the T&C team to ensure T&C delivery plans align with the QC train readiness requirements
  • Ensure all modifications are implemented in accordance with the defined quality standards
  • Ensure that train, unit and car configurations are accurately maintained within the HRC systems
  • Maintain accurate records for work completed within Mantis
  • Conduct detailed technical investigations
  • Provide input to FRACAS
  • Work with the Technical PM and Engineering to support FRACAS resolution

Essential Requirements

  • An appropriate qualification in an Engineering/QA discipline
  • A minimum of 5 years’ rolling stock experience
  • Proven skills in planning and execution of project plans in stipulated timeframes
  • Understanding and working knowledge of safety management practices
  • Strong systems, operational and reporting skills
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills (oral & written) including strong negotiation and influencing skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships with a variety of people at different levels both internally and externally
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to organize and priorities demands, handle multiple complex tasks simultaneously, set and meet deadlines and follow-through within a fast-paced environment with multiple and competing demands
  • Proficient skills in computers: MS Word, Excel, email
