Job Description

The Australian Financial Review is seeking a Queensland correspondent to lead our
coverage of a hugely important state election year.

Based in our Brisbane office, this role is broad and encompasses politics as well as general
Queensland news and personalities that are of interest to the Financial Review audience.

Reporting to the Deputy Editor (news), you will be a self-starter, adept at identifying stories that will resonate nationally, and able to write across a wide range of topics, including politics, business, property and the energy transition.

Day to day, you will:

  • Break news that matters for a national audience
  • Write features and analysis that bring Queensland’s biggest stories to life
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other bureaus (state and Canberra) to write stories of national significance
  • Build and maintain a deep and diverse network of contacts
  • Liaise with and take direction from news-desk editors

Please note, this is a 16 month fixed-term contract position and will include some weekend work.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a strong news sense, a good understanding of Queensland issues, excellent contacts, and be able to write news, features, commentary and analysis.

What we would like to see on your resume:

  • Journalism experience, ideally covering politics and/or business
  • Track record of breaking news and writing compelling features
  • Good time management and prioritisation skills
  • Ability to tell Queensland stories that resonate nationally
  • Ability to work autonomously
