Job description

Radiation Safety and Occupational Hygiene Technician

Unique opportunity to join a market disruptor that has a diverse client base, exciting equity upside and significant growth potential.

  • Key hands-on role on a world class operational site.
  • Secure, permanent full-time position.

Did you know that Australia creates more hazardous waste per capita than any country in the world?

That is a big problem for all of us.

The Company

Tellus Holdings Ltd (“Tellus”) established the state-of-the-art Sandy Ridge Facility in Western Australia to address the increasing challenges of hazardous waste and by-products arising from diverse industries. This spans “start-up” industries like new energy and battery minerals processing, “scale-up” industries such as expanding refining and manufacturing, and “clean-up” industries including oil and gas decommissioning.

When you join Tellus, you become part of a team that cares about its people and the health of our planet.

With a culture that values being the safest place for its people, trust and passion, whilst working alongside talented scientists, engineers and experienced industry practitioners, you can be part of making an impact in permanent waste management for us now and for our future generations.

The Opportunity

Reporting to our Manager Radiological Waste, we are looking for a motivated, passionate, and authentic individual who believes in our mission to make Australia a cleaner and safer place to live.

Based at our operational facility – Sandy Ridge – on a Fly In Fly Out basis (7/7 day shift), with limited time spent in our Perth Office as needed, you will work closely with both our on-site and off-site teams to provide support with radiation protection and Occupational hygiene monitoring, sampling and compliance requirements under our Radiation Management Plan (RMP) and our Health and Hygiene Management Plan (HHMP).

You will be responsible for routine and ad-hoc monitoring and surveys of potential radiation and Occupational hygiene related hazards as well as providing instruction and support to workers for the management of identified risks under supervision of the Radiation Safety Officer for the site. This will include some monitoring of environmental indicators such as soil, water, fauna and vegetation as well as direct monitoring and sampling of waste material and facility related parameters. You will be further accountable for the receipt, on site verification and inventory management for radiological and safeguards permitted material. This includes preparation of scheduled inventory and associated reports and representation during regulatory inspections and audits.

You will be required to assist with the development, implementation and monitoring of occupational hygiene and radiation protection programs to ensure the continued safety of our people.

You will drive continuous improvement and compliance of radiation protection and Occupational hygiene practices by actively seeking new technologies and methods that ensure statutory compliance.

As the subject matter expert in our operational team, you will provide support, advice and training for the safe handling of waste material and equipment and may be asked to head up any required investigations, recording and reporting of incidents to relevant stakeholders.

This role will fulfil the duties of the Surface Ventilation Officer, Noise Officer and act as Radiation Safety Technician to support the statutory Radiation Safety Officer. The successful individual will be mentored by internal and external subject matter experts such as the RSO to provide professional growth and career progression.

Role Requirements

There are a few essential requirements that we are seeking.

  • Firstly, you will need to hold a qualification in science, engineering, occupational hygiene or equivalent.
  • You need to have demonstrated experience in taking samples and in field measurements according to quality standards and reporting requirements.
  • You must understand the identification and management of occupational hazards preferably within the waste management, mining or oil and gas industries. Previous exposure to the management of radioactive substances or radiation equipment is preferable.
  • You must also show your ability to be solutions-focused, with a proactive can-do attitude, be able to work across all levels of the business in a consultative, respectful, and team-based approach.
  • It will be advantageous if you are currently or have previously been licensed for the management or handling of radioactive material or equipment within Australia. Training will be provided within this role for the individual to obtain the relevant licenses from regulators.

Finally, if you have previous experience in a similar role, especially in management of radioactive waste storage, transport, and disposal, including regulatory approvals – fantastic!

If you don’t, that is ok as we will provide the required training you need to be successful in the team.
