​​​​About the Role:

This is a Permanent Part Time position commencing at 64 hours per fortnight within the Rosella ward, Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

The September 2024 intake for the ACPIC program commences on Monday 9th September 2024.

There is an option to increase up to 80 hours per fortnight /Full Time (1 FTE) at the end of the program if desired. Throughout the program shift types will include 8 hr AM/PM shifts, 12hr day shifts, and in the last few weeks of the program 10hr or 12hr night shifts are introduced.

The Advancing Competencies in Paediatric Intensive Care (ACPIC) program is 12 weeks in duration, conducted within the Rosella ward and offers ongoing employment at the finalisation of the program. During the program you will have regular catch ups with the Nurse Unit Manager and Education Team, and will have dedicated education team members to support you and group sessions with the PICU Psychologist. 

We are looking for Registered Nurses that are interested in developing paediatric critical care nursing knowledge and skills to support the growth of our Paediatric Intensive Care Service at the Royal Childrens Hospital (RCH). This is a great opportunity for nurses wanting to transition into the paediatric critical care speciality through a supportive and structured program. The ACPIC Program is an immersive, challenging and fast paced program and provides the necessary foundations of paediatric critical care nursing. You will be provided with ongoing support and development within the critical care setting from an experienced nursing education and research team.

There are several established pathways to advanced roles within PICU and the RCH offers a Post Graduate Nursing Scholarship Program.

Classification for this position with range from RN Grade 2 Year 2 to Grade 2 Year 8, YP3 - YP9 (FTE base salary $71,333 to $95,378 per annum, plus superannuation).

Program Structure

  • Study Day 1: ACPIC Orientation
  • Study Day 2: Non-Invasive Ventilation including principles of ventilation, blood gas analysis and care of the patient
  • Study Day 3: Invasive Ventilation including principles of ventilation, sedation and analgesia of the intubated patient, practical skills station and care of the patient with an artificial airway
  • Study Day4: Paediatric Cardiac Care and Management

Program Support

Double Time Education: 2-3 times per week

  • ECG interpretation
  • ABG interpretation
  • Cardiac Blood Flow
  • Neonatal Care
  • Cardiac Anatomy
  • X-ray Interpretation
  • Resus Drugs

Bedside Education:

  • Daily Bedside education, exploring patient priority problems.

Assessments:

  • Non-Invasive Ventilation Assessment (theoretical and practical)
  • Invasive Ventilation Assessment (theoretical and practical)
  • Two Comprehensive Patient Assessments

Supports:

  • Catch Ups with Nurse Unit Manager and Education team member on weeks 3, 6 and 10 to provide support, mentorship, and plan for ongoing educational opportunities.
  • Sessions with the PICU Psychologist
