About Us
The Women’s & Children’s Health Network provides state of the art health care for women, babies, children and young people across South Australia. We are the state’s leading provider of specialist care for children with acute and chronic conditions as well as being SA’s largest maternity and obstetric service.
Approximately 5000 babies are born at the Women's and Children's Hospital every year. The WCH Neonatal Service provides care at all levels to babies born within WCH, other hospitals in SA and interstate areas such as Mildura, Broken Hill and Alice Springs.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the Special Care Baby Unit at the WCH is unlike most others in Australia because of the broad spectrum of newborns it receives and cares for. It is the largest Neonatal service in SA providing a high acuity medical and surgical service, some of which are not available anywhere else in the state.
The WCH Neonatal Service provides neonatal advice and support to the stand-alone transport service MedSTAR Kids.
The Department works closely with other WCH paediatric subspecialties and allied health departments. Care is provided by a team of neonatologists, registrars, neonatal nurse practitioners, neonatal intensive care nurses and special care nurses and midwives.
