About Neonatology:

The Neonatology Department is composed of several specialized units:

  • KEMH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, situated in Subiaco, stands as the largest tertiary/quaternary perinatal NICU in Australia. Approximately 2,200 babies who are born preterm, need respiratory support or require other intensive treatment are admitted to the King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) NICU each year. The NICU admits approximately 150 neonates born at <28 weeks gestation annually. This unit is at the forefront of managing complex pregnancies across Western Australia, overseen by skilled feto-maternal medicine specialists. Here, an exceptional opportunity for clinical exposure awaits, particularly in the diagnosis and treatment of acute neonatal issues, with a special focus on prematurity. The unit offers valuable experience in delivery room resuscitation, ventilator management for acute respiratory conditions, continuous monitoring, and nutritional support for extremely preterm or critically ill newborns.
  • PCH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, located within the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre site in Nedlands, serves as the sole tertiary surgical NICU in Western Australia. This unit presents an excellent chance to engage with the diagnosis and management of a diverse range of neonatal surgical conditions and congenital anomalies. Additionally, the PCH NICU handles the majority of outborn infants requiring neonatal intensive care.
  • Newborn Emergency Transport Service (NETS WA), situated at PCH, is intricately involved in the retrieval and transport of ill newborns from both metropolitan and regional areas of Western Australia. Covering the largest geographical area in the world for a single neonatal retrieval service; retrieving by road, helicopter, and fixed wing aircraft. Opportunities also exist for participation in the retrieval and transfer of cardiac patients to children's hospitals in Melbourne and Brisbane.

The CAHS Neonatology Department offers an enriching experience that contributes to the well-being of newborns and young children, while also providing valuable learning and growth for medical professionals.
