ABOUT THE OFFICE      

The School of Medicine embraces its responsibility to make a contribution to improving healthcare outcomes for all Australians. To further this goal, we have innovative programs in bioethics and a focus on rural medicine, mental health, palliative care and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. The School offers two four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) programs that have been fully accredited by the Australian Medical Council of Australia and feature a focus on small group teaching and problem-based learning, combined with rich clinical experiences across the entire program. At the heart of the program is a research stream that builds your capabilities over the four years and we encourage further research at the Masters and PhD level.       

ABOUT THE ROLE      

This position will work closely with Director, GP & PHCR to examine prevalence, patterns and disease severity of multimorbidity and primary care management of children/adolescents with intellectual and development disability in WA. Part of the 5-year National Health Medical Research Committee (NHMRC) led by A/Prof Jenny Downs, Telethon Kids Institute/UWA involving both quantitative and qualitative research.   

Key Responsibilities      

• Develop an understanding of multimorbidity in children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities.
• Undertake data extraction from database of WA patients.
• Work in collaboration with Director, GP & PHCR to achieve consensus in evaluations.
• Apply Cumulative Illness Rating Scale to patient records in the cohort.
• Provide support to other aspects of the study and help with data analysis and study write-up.
• Contribute as a team member to enhance clinical research skills.
• Contribute to team meetings, research seminars, conference presentations, and future publications emerging from the study.
• The conduct of research under limited supervision either as a member of a team or, where appropriate, independently, and the production or contribution to the production of conference and seminar papers and publications from that research.
• Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise..
• Development of a limited amount of research-related material for teaching or other purposes with appropriate guidance from other staff
• Occasional contributions to teaching in relation to their research project(s).
• Experimental design and operation of advanced laboratory and technical equipment or conduct of advanced research procedures.
• Attendance at meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the research is connected and/or at departmental and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a limited number of committees.

 Qualifications & Experience      

• Four years of tertiary study completed in the relevant discipline or have equivalent qualifications or research experience. An honours degree or higher qualifications or equivalent research experience (desired).
• Possession of a PhD or a Nursing qualification registrable with AHPRA and a Fellowship of a relevant professional body or significant progress towards.
• Research experience may have contributed to or resulted in publications, conference papers, reports or professional or technical contributions which give evidence of research potential.
• Experience in working in nursing and medical settings.

Knowledge, skills & abilities      

• In determining experience relative to qualifications, regard is had to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, creative achievement, professional contributions and/or contributions to technical achievement.
• Paediatric clinical nursing skills
• Awareness of terminology used in clinical records and notes.
• Interest in developing skills and experience in primary care research.
