About the Position
As the Research FellowIndigenous Engagement – you will provide high level research and data assistance to the NHMRC Healthy Environments and Lives (HEAL) Network. The HEAL Network aims to take national and international leadership in environmental change and health research that will provide the evidence, capacity and capability and tools urgently needed to: 1) Protect and improve community health, especially at-risk groups and people in regions and communities disproportionately affected by environmental and climate change; 2) Strengthen health system resilience, preparedness and responsiveness to changing environmental conditions, climate extremes, and related diseases, and reduce its environmental impact; 3) Reduce inequities and inequalities within and across communities and generations.

The Research Fellow will be conducting research within the HEAL’s theme of Indigenous Knowledge Systems and will be based in the Northern Institute (NI), Charles Darwin University (CDU), Casuarina Campus, Northern Territory (NT). The Northern Institute (NI) is a major Australian research institute known for high quality expertise and training in social and policy research. 

This position will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement across the Northern Territory Hub / Communities of Practice (CoP). The position will provide support to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cross-cutting theme and Indigenous Steering Committee and advise on First Nations engagement in other CoPs across the Network. It will also engage with the NACCHO-HEAL Network Coordinator at the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, and other Indigenous health organisations to promote cross-cultural engagement in HEAL's research programmes. The holder will apply participatory research methods and protocols to enhance Indigenous participation in health education in the Northern Territory in collaboration with the Menzies School of Health Research and Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance Northern Territory (AMSANT). This position requires a researcher with experience in community engagement, research translation and education.

The successful applicant will contribute to the development of high-quality research and partnership with educational programs across the NI, Faculty of Arts and Society (FAS), Charles Darwin University and with external partners.

About You
To be successful, you will require:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Postgraduate qualification and research experience in one or more of the following areas: Indigenous Knowledges, Indigenous health, public health, Environmental adaptation, Health sciences, Community engagement, Research translation and Education.
  • Experience working with Indigenous people and communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct qualitative and quantitative research.
  • Demonstrated ability in writing project reports and writing of research grant applications.
  • Demonstrated management capability within a complex project environment involving multiple partners and cross-cultural stakeholders, including those from diverse and multi-cultural backgrounds, and preferably with a remote area context.
  • Demonstrated understanding of ethical considerations of research and a high level of discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information and material.
  • Highly developed planning and organisational skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure to manage and meet tight and competing deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills including demonstrated experience using Microsoft suite, data analysis software and referencing databases.

Remuneration 
Appointment to this role will be at Research Active Academic Level A. The base salary will be in the range of $72,702 - $109,071 per annum. The total remuneration package will be in the range of $85,061 - $127,613 per annum, including 17% superannuation.
