About the Role
Applied Horticultural Research is seeking a Research Scientist specialising in agronomy. The successful candidate will focus on developing and optimizing irrigation and production practices to enhance avocado yield, quality, and sustainability. This position requires a detail-oriented professional with a strong background in horticultural research and ideally with experience in avocado agronomy.
Location: Sydney or based in avocado growing regions in Queensland or Tristate.

Key Responsibilities
Research and Development:
- Design and conduct experiments to optimize avocado production practices, including soil management, irrigation, nutrition, pollination, canopy and yield management.
- Develop and implement innovative practices to enhance fruit quality and increase yield.
- Investigate and promote sustainable farming practices to improve avocado production efficiency.
Data Analysis and Reporting:
- Analyse experimental data using statistical software and interpret results.
- Prepare comprehensive trial reports
- Present research findings at industry conferences, workshops, and webinars
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with other researchers, agronomists, and industry stakeholders to develop and implement research projects.
- Communicate research outcomes and best practices to avocado growers and industry partners.
Project Management:
- Manage research projects, including budgeting, resource allocation, and timeline management.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards in all research activities.
Qualifications and Experience
Education:
- Tertiary qualification in Horticulture, Plant Science, Agriculture, or a related field, ideally with a focus on avocado production or subtropical/tropical fruit crops. Postgraduate research degrees will be looked upon favourably.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5 years research experience in tree crop agronomy (preferably avocados) or extensive experience in irrigation research.
- Proven track record of delivering high quality research projects
- Experience in field-based research and working directly with growers
Skills:
- Research – critical thinking, problem solving and analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Familiarity with modern agricultural technologies and growing practices
Working rights:
- Must be an Australian citizen, have Australian resident status, or full working rights at the time of application.
