About the Role

Flinders University is employing state-of-the-art research strategies in neuroscience by using hoverflies to understand how the nervous system codes visual information. As the Research Software Development Assistant, your role will be integral in the design, development, and implementation of computer-programming support for basic research in the field of Insect Motion Vision. You will be responsible for developing and testing software used in virtual reality experiments for hoverflies. You will apply your excellent understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design to analyse and interpret the hoverfly flight data generated in the Insect Vision Group. You will draft scientific reports, prepare manuscripts, coordinate research activity, develop protocols for the validation of all software, and actively participate in the development of research protocols for hoverfly virtual reality.

Your expertise in Research Software Development will aid students and scientists in understanding the outputs required for developing software and developing protocols for the validation of all software. In this role, you will also ensure that you work and cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the University.

About You

You will demonstrate a high level of written communication skills, including the ability to draft scientific works and record data. Your keen attention to detail will allow you to prioritize tasks and autonomously meet deadlines while always demonstrating a commitment to high quality service delivery.

Complementing your strong knowledge and experience in computer science, will be your well-developed skills in either Matlab, DeepLabCut, and Unity. You will have a degree qualification in computer science or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education and/or training. Experience in virtual reality, and 3D graphics and simulation are desired.
