Job description

NSW Health has developed the Safe Wayz program for children of NSW to experience safe, nurturing and respectful relationships, and appropriate and healthy sexual development. This role will be part of the new Safe Wayz program and coordinates an integrated response for children under the age of criminal responsibility (currently 10 years in NSW) with problematic or harmful sexual behaviours (PHSBs). Safe Wayz adopts a strength based, family focussed and culturally centred trauma-informed approach to working with children and families to help behaviours from escalating. NSLHD strives to create a culturally safe workplace for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff. Staff are also supported by the Muru Dali Gili Gili Network (meaning Path to Shine), which aims to make staff feel a sense of belonging and connection with the community.

Salary (per week):

Health Professional (Level 1/2):  $1,359.64 - $1,939.70 

Psychologist: $1,432.43 - $2,096.59 

Health Professional (Level 3): $2,081.22 - $2,148.66

Health Professional (Level 4): $2,252.73 - $2,307.33

You will be based in the Community Health Centre on the Royal North Shore Hospital Campus.

What you'll be doing

The Safe Wayz Program coordinates an integrated response for children under the age of criminal responsibility (currently 10 years in NSW) with problematic or harmful sexual behaviours (PHSBs).  Safe Wayz adopts a strength-based, family focussed and culturally centred trauma-informed approach to working with children and families to help behaviours from escalating.  
The Safe Wayz Program coordinates primary prevention initiatives to educate children, families, schools, carers, community and professionals about problematic & harmful sexual behaviours (PHSB) including guidance on developmentally appropriate sexual behaviours. This role specifically builds capacity to identify and understand PHSB, collaborates with agency partners, provides consultation and training and advocates for system and practice changes. This role coordinates pathways into specialist counselling services for children and families who need them and will hold a small clinical case load.  The role coordinates cultural consultation to support non-Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander clinicians working with Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander children and families.
 
Northern Sydney Local Health District seeks to provide a culturally safe environment for people from diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander families and communities. This role will be part of a local Safe Wayz Program team which is integrated into the Districts Prevention and Response to Violence Abuse and Neglect (PARVAN) Service. The program team will include one Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role, and one non identified position.  The team will be supported through a state-wide clinical network, who will provide clinical and cultural connections, and support in undertaking this work. As an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait IslanderSafe Wayz Clinician you will have access to individual cultural supervision.
 
This role will have a professional development plan in place that will provide the opportunity for work based development which allows for progression through the Award levels in accordance with the position holder’s skill acquisition.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

    1. Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such under section 14 (d) of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act (1977), with knowledge and experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
    2. Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Graduate Certificate in Human and Community Services (Interpersonal Trauma) or other relevant counselling degree deemed appropriate by the employer with minimum post graduate experience of level 2 or above. Social Workers must have eligibility for the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). Psychologists must have a four year degree in psychology, being a three year degree with a fourth year honours in psychology; or a qualification deemed equivalent by the employer.
    3. Demonstrated understanding and skills in providing culturally responsive child centred, family focussed counselling, support and case management to address problematic or harmful sexual behaviours with young children and their carers. Demonstrated ability to create Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community connections, engagement and collaboration to affect outcomes with an understanding of intergenerational trauma, contextual and causal factors for violence, abuse and neglect and the principles of cultural safety. Demonstrated experience participating in and/or leading quality improvement activities, service development and evaluation.
