Sample/Prototype Sewing Machinist

RAPP Australia Pty. Ltd. is a locally owned, family business founded in 1982, manufacturing Medical Kits for Ambulance Services and other emergency response services around Australia and internationally. We provide Design services to complement our manufacturing. 

Role and Responsibilities:

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic Sewing Machinist, for either permanent part time or full time, to collaborate with our Design and Innovations teams to construct prototypes of their designs. The candidate will also work on Production orders when required.

Combining the ability to collaborate on a task, a general positive attitude, and a passion for problem solving. 

 The successful candidate will have the following essential skills:

  • Able to operate industrial walking foot single needle, compensating foot, twin needle and binding sewing machines. 
  • Able to read drawings – either annotated pattern print-outs or hand-drawn sketches. Able to understand these and construct the prototype accordingly.
  • Willing and physically able to work with heavier coated fabrics.
  • Has strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to confidently give feedback and request amendments from the designers when needed.
  • Able to collaborate and problem solve within a tight knit team.
  • An ability to use trial and error and experimentation resolve construction challenges.
  • An ability and commitment to continually improve and streamline sewing construction processes.
  • Open to learning new skills and picking up tips along the way.
  • Gives attention to detail, has care and takes pride in what they make.
  • Able to manage your time and work to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to multitask and work effectively under pressure.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness in work area.
  • Friendly demeanour.

Desirable skills, but not essential to apply for the position:

  • Understanding bag or luggage construction 
  • Machine programming knowledge or interest in self-learning to program the machine a bonus. 
  • An appreciation for streamlining production processes within sewing context. To have ideas about simplifying construction where possible.
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft suite, Excel, and Word.
  • Style CAD or digital pattern-making skills.

This role is for an experienced Sewing Machinist that can demonstrate their ability. Candidates will be short listed and may be asked to come in for an interview and to trial on a sewing machine.
