What you'll be doing
The Research Officer will contribute actively to the development and provision of high quality adolescent health research by assisting the clinicians within the Department of Adolescent Medicine (DAM) with clinical research projects.
The Complex Adolescent Clinic provides multidisciplinary medical and psychosocial assessment and management of adolescents with complex chronic conditions, chronic pain and fatigue syndromes impacting on their wellbeing and function. The service provides inpatient and outpatient programs for the care of adolescents with complex disorders who are at increased risk of complications relating to non adherence, risky behaviours and transition to adult health care requiring specific expertise & incorporates the self-management clinic.
CICADA Service This is a lifespan approach to the Care and Intervention for Children and Adolescents affected by Drugs and Alcohol. The clinical service provides multidisciplinary comprehensive diagnostic assessment and management for high risk vulnerable children and adolescents with FASD, substance use within the family or the adolescent. The holistic model of care includes assessment and management of adolescent issues, developmental, sexual health and child protection concerns. The CICADA Program of Research has various research projects developed to demonstrate the efficacy of an early intervention prevention approach analysing a broad range of health and social indicators, assessments and interventions provided by the clinical team.
The Gender Service provides interdisciplinary collaborative clinical service between DAM, Psychological Medicine and Paediatric Endocrinology. The DAM providing triage, comprehensive assessment, diagnostic evaluation and collaborative management and care coordination for children and adolescents referred for assessment of gender dysphoria. Ethics approved prospective long term follow up study is in progress to provide ongoing evidence base for optimising outcomes for young people with gender dysphoria.
Adolescent Bladder Clinic The Bladder Clinic is a multidisciplinary service providing comprehensive assessment, diagnostic evaluation and management for adolescents with incontinence.Current clinical research is evaluating the efficacy of this multidisciplinary approach with initial very favourable pilot data available. Ongoing research includes assessing the Health Service Needs of High School Students with Urinary Incontinence.
Self Management Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic to assist adolescents with management of their chronic Illness. Current research is a randomised controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of a self-management program for adolescents with a chronic illness.

  • Experience in clinical research and preferably working with children or adolescents.
  • Honours/Masters degree in Psychology or equivalent training in health/behavioural sciences research methodology and statistics.
  • Experience in clinical research and with qualitative and quantitative research methods along with experience in Adolescent Health (research or clinical).
  • Experience with writing ethics proposals as well as statistical analysis, collecting, entering and managing data using SPSS.
  • Knowledge of both paper and electronic data collection forms with excellent computing skills (excel).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated scientific writing skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a self-directed manner, as well as part of a team.
