The purpose of the role is to contribute to the provision, maintenance and improvement of a comprehensive 24/7 pathology service to the Logan and Beaudesert Hospitals. To be successful you will perform pre-analytical specimen processing along with scientific duties in Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Transfusion including crossmatching and release of blood products, urine and fluid Microscopy and rapid PCR, all in accordance with Pathology Queensland procedures.
Work cooperatively and communicate effectively within the Logan laboratory team and with clients, both internal and external to the laboratory.
Commensurate with level of experience provide scientific education and direction to support staff including, undergraduate, clinical assistant and administrative staff.
Key competencies (role specific criteria)
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:
- Ability to participate in a multi-disciplinary team on any required shifts within this 24/7 service including weekends, public holidays, extra shifts and overtime when necessary to maintain pathology services.
- Ability to work solo overnight shifts on occasion.
- Reliability and punctuality to ensure uninterrupted pathology service provision 24/7.
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles and procedures used in Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Immunoassay, Transfusion Medicine, some Microbiology and Specimen Reception
- Experience in the performance of Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Immunoassay, Transfusion Medicine investigations, Urine Microscopy and rapid PCR.
- Experience in the use of software systems including a Laboratory Information System (such as Auslab), a Quality Control package, Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, BloodNet, an antibody register, POCT software and more.
- Ability to solve problems, work calmly in challenging environments, improve performance following feedback.
- Well-developed communication skills and ability to interact positively and respectfully with colleagues and clients.
- Willingness to act in Supervising Scientist roles when required.
- Understanding of laboratory quality systems and the requirements of NATA accreditation and ISO certification. =
Qualifications, registrations and other requirements
- The successful applicant must hold at least a tertiary Degree in Medical Laboratory Science (or equivalent) from a recognised university or tertiary institution.
- Your qualification should include Transfusion Medicine and Clinical Haematology components.
- Transfusion and Blood Film Morphology experience are highly desirable.
- Active membership of a relevant professional sciientific association would be well-regarded.
