The Investigations Team, part of the Water Quality and Investigation group, are actively involved in the environmental investigations, assessments and analysis relating to pollution and emerging contaminants. The team also provides water sampling training throughout Queensland and advice to compliance staff in terms of investigations. The work is diverse and interesting, and we use a combination of ecotoxicology, environmental chemistry and aquatic ecology to investigate pollution incidents. The investigations team are also responsible for delivering other monitoring projects related to aquatic contamination in Queensland.

Your role
As the Scientist PO3 you will:
- Conduct data handling (storage), checking, analysis, presentation and interpretation as well as maintaining of accurate and confidential records of field work and data analysis within an evidentiary process.
- Undertake handling of water, sediment, soil and biota samples in a manner consistent with scientific and evidentiary procedures.
- Prepare, assist with and lead fieldwork in your area of expertise. The field work can be for extended periods of time (home on weekends), occasionally on short notice and can be in remote areas so flexibility is needed. Field work can be physically demanding and at times can be in unpleasant environments.
- Work as a member of a team to contribute to or write technical reports in you area of expertise.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.

This position requires:
- Demonstrated knowledge of environmental quality and ecosystem health in the following areas:
- Monitoring and assessment of water, biota, sediment or soil and contaminants
- Statistical assessment of environmental quality and monitoring data
- Quality assurance and quality control systems and procedures pertaining to scientific research and monitoring
- Relevant methods, standards and guidelines
- The use of computer software for data management, analysis and presentation
- Aquatic ecology, environmental chemistry, and/or ecotoxicology
- Preparation and lead fieldwork in your area of expertise.
- Skills in electrofishing and macroinvertebrate collection, or the willingness to acquire these skills, is beneficial.
- An ability to operate as an effective member of the team. Someone who builds and sustains positive relationships with team members and clients.
- Someone who understands (or can rapidly acquire knowledge of) and can apply legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks.
- An interest in learning scientific skills associated with the environment that may be outside your immediate area of expertise.
- High level communication, strong liaison, negotiation and interpersonal skills. Someone who confidently presents messages and technical information both orally and in writing.
- Contribution to workplace equity and diversity that enriches our culture of safety, innovation, respect and inclusion.
