About the opportunity

The Sydney School of Education and Social Work is a school within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Our academics and professional staff prepare educators and social workers to contribute to solving the grand challenges faced by our planet and its peoples. More than 3000 students undertake our coursework programs, and a further 200 are engaged in higher degree research.

The Secondary Professional Experience Coordinator- Education-Focused appointment will contribute to scholarly teaching in Professional Experience and at least one secondary (Stages 4-6) Key Learning Area in initial teacher education programs offered by the Sydney School of Education and Social Work. You should have recent classroom teaching experience in secondary school settings, knowledge of current relevant school curriculum as well as demonstrate evidence of research-informed teaching in Professional Experience and at least one secondary KLA.

Your workload will be 60% teaching, 20% research and 20% governance.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • liaise with the Director of Professional Experience and working collaboratively with the PEx team to manage Secondary Professional Experience (PEx) placements.
  • attend weekly meetings with the PEX team to discuss matters related to PEx placements
  • assist in the design and development of PEx calendars, Canvas Sites, Handbooks and specific PEx accreditation information
  • consult with the Director and PEx team, to develop, revise, and maintain quality information documents for communication (accessible through relevant CANVAS sites) with Teaching Education Students (TES), Supervising Teachers, Tertiary mentors and School principals
  • develop and maintain strong relationships with Schools, including working with the school-based PEx coordinator to promote excellence in PEx
  • liaise with OPE staff to provide academic advice concerning school placements
  • make strategic visits to develop and maintain professional relationships with schools to ensure quality placements for preservice teachers
  • manage tertiary mentors, including providing professional learning to tertiary mentors, and liaison with tertiary mentors regarding students in need of additional support
  • provide professional learning for school based PEx coordinators/centre directors, and supervising teachers
  • liaise with Curriculum Directors and Unit Coordinators of PEx units, and Student Life Advisers to provide information to students concerning procedures for PEx placements, manage students at-risk, and progression of students who fail PEx units and provide information related to procedures mandated by NESA and other organisations
  • interview and advise students who have been identified as at-risk or having failed their PEx
  • coordinate the AfGT for secondary students
  • supervise training of markers and moderation processes.


Teaching/Co-ordination will include Secondary PEx units, including but not limited to:

  • EDSE4508 Final placement
  • EDMT6020 MTeach Internship
  • EDMT5681 Professional Experience 1
  • EDSE3073 Professional Experience A

About you

  • a PhD in an academic field relevant to education
  • deep and broad experience in teaching and learning in at least one secondary KLA, as evidenced by participation in teaching within an established education program and experience in teaching in a variety of settings including secondary and higher education
  • demonstrated success in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives related to Professional Experience
  • a developing research profile evidenced by original, high-quality and independent research in education and/or a related discipline
  • developing knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the discipline and higher education sector.
