About us

As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events. 


Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.

Purpose of the role

The Financial Accounting and Tax unit is responsible for all activities relating to QFES statutory financial reporting, general ledger, asset accounting, taxation and assurance.  This includes the annual financial statements and the coordination of the related year end process, Queensland Audit Office audits and Chief Financial Officer Assurance Statements, month end processes including journals and reconciliations, and annual asset stocktake and revaluation process. The unit also works together with Queensland Shared Services, Taxation unit to ensure efficient and timely delivery of Fringe Benefits Tax and Business Activity Statement reporting.


Reporting to the Executive Manager, you will be responsible for contributing to the delivery of asset accounting services to QFES. You will develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal business units and external stakeholders to provide expert asset accounting guidance and advice in relation to financial legislation, policies and procedures. You will also contribute to the development, implementation and review of best practice strategies, policy, systems and processes to enhance services and meet organisational requirements.

Key requirements

Highly desirable requirements

  • Experience in asset Accounting and/or possession of tertiary and post graduate qualifications in accounting or related disciplines.
  • Current Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) accreditation with CPA Australia and/or Chartered Accountant accreditation with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ).
Your key accountabilities

Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:

  • Effectively perform asset Accounting and reporting functions within a team environment including asset reconciliations, work in progress reporting and asset register maintenance.
  • Coordinate the planning and completion of asset accounting requirements including the annual stocktake, asset revaluations, useful life reviews and financial reporting requirements.
  • Provide expertise and advice to contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of Financial Accounting policies, procedures, systems and reporting.
  • Research and provide quality advice and reports on financial reporting requirements and accounting issues to management, and ensure appropriate response to a range of correspondence, in accordance with departmental requirements.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships and networks with internal and external partners to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of financial processes and controls.
  • Create a work environment encouraging positive teamwork whilst empowering individuals to strive for continuous improvement, seek challenges and achieve results.
  • Assist in the ongoing development of staff through team leadership and performance management, and planning and review processes.
