St Vincent’s is contracted by leading service providers MTC Broad-spectrum to deliver health services to Parklea Correctional Centre – a major Sydney prison with capacity for 1,816 male inmates.

In 1838, when the Sisters of Charity who founded St Vincent’s arrived in Sydney from Ireland, they immediately went to the Parramatta Female Factory, where they made an important difference to the lives of hundreds of women convicts there. Similarly today, St Vincent’s Correctional Health aims to make a major difference by providing multidisciplinary healthcare to inmates at Parklea Correctional Complex.

About the role:

A vacancy exists in the above unit within the Parklea Corrections Complex for a highly motivatedSenior Aboriginal Health Worker (Male) with appropriate knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team. Our progressive and innovative team offers development opportunities for our staff and a caring environment for the delivery of high quality patient centred care. The role will be required to work in partnership with correctional health staff to deliver culturally appropriate and patient centred services to the patients of Parklea Correctional Complex. Onsite parking is available.

As Senior Aboriginal Health Worker you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on an individual and the community. You will serve as a critical link to identifying the health care needs of the individual patient and promote health and wellbeing.

Selection Criteria:

  • Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia.

  • Be male and of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1977. Being male is recognised as a genuine occupation qualification and is authorised under section 31(2h) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

  • Hold a minimum Certificate III in Aboriginal Primary Health Care Work (Community Care) or equivalent health training and experience, also a willingness to undertake further education, as required.

  • Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal culture and health issues impacting Aboriginal custodial patients and/or those experiencing with mental health, alcohol or drugs or chronic disease health needs.

  • High level skills in time management, liaison and negotiation, including the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a high demand environment with competing demands.

  • High level written, verbal and computer communication skills, with experience in providing support and advocacy for Aboriginal patients, families and carers.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop linkages and partnerships with local Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal controlled organisations and non-government organisations.

  • Unrestricted class C Driver’s License.
