Position Description:
The Farm Animal Lead supports research and development activities by providing key support in animal care and husbandry, farming practices, general farm and facility maintenance. The position is responsible for management of the Yarrandoo farm animal colony and day-to-day operations of the farm Animal Technician team.
Functions, Duties, Tasks:
- Responsible for Farm Animal colony management including general husbandry, health programs, nutrition programs, breeding, procurement/acquisition and identification.
- Lead the Farm Animal team in the execution of day-to-day operations on-site to ensure all operational requirements are met (e.g. contractor rostering, task allocations etc.)
- Establish relationships with key stakeholders to ensure operational and study needs e.g. husbandry tasks, handling of animals and study documentation etc. are completed to an acceptable standard.
- Oversight of the cleaning and maintenance program of farm animal facilities,
- Prepare facilities and animals for studies by ensuring correct allocation of animals on study or model request.
- Provide emergency after hours services support as required and participate in weekend rosters.
- Maintain veterinary supplies, animal feed and products for farm animals on site including budget control in this area.
- Provide leadership and direction in the execution of animal handling and animal husbandry procedures
- Lead and implement farming operations at Yarrandoo including spraying, sowing and irrigation.
- Ensure detailed instructions, Animal Welfare Compliance, Quality Compliance, Standard Operating Procedures and Study Protocols are fully complied with and supported
- Lead the maintenance of a clean and safe work environment, demonstrating safe work behaviours while using proper safety equipment and following safety procedures, providing direction to contractor staff as required.
- Basic maintenance of farm infrastructure e.g. farm fencing, water troughs, yards and irrigation equipment
- Operate and maintain equipment which is used by the section in its daily operations e.g. tractors and forklifts
- Perform any other duties or serve in any other capacity as may be determined by company management.
- Minimum 5 years related industry experience and or Bachelor degree/cert in Animal/Agricultural Science or studies
- Experience in croping, driving tractors, handling large animal/cattle and other livestock.
- Willing to relocate to Sydney or currently staying in Sydney.
- Basic skills in word processing (Word) and spreadsheets (Excel) and presenting (Powerpoint)
- Advanced ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
- Have ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to create and interpret a variety of technical and scientific data.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as a team member or leader.
- Ability to co-ordinate human and physical resources effectively.
- Forklift Licence.
- Chem Cert or ability to obtain.
