Job description

Description

Clyde & Co, global law firm with leading corporate clients is known for one of the largest, most experienced, and well-established Energy, Marine & Natural Resources teams in the world. Our marine lawyers are based in over 25 locations across five continents, delivering comprehensive, commercially focused legal advice in all time zones. In Australia, Clyde & Co is consistently ranked Tier One for shipping by Legal500 and Chamber & Partners.

We are looking for a Senior Associate level lawyer with between 5-8 years' post qualification experience to join the Sydney based practice led by Partner Ernest van Buuren, most recently recommended by Who's Who Legal 2024 for Transport - Shipping, and listed by Doyles Guide 2024 as Preeminent Admiralty, Shipping & Maritime Lawyer.

You will have excellent knowledge of large scale litigation (class actions preferred) and a solid background managing discovery.

About the team

You will be working with some of the most highly regarded Marine & Shipping practitioners in the Australian market consistently ranked at the top of the industry by the world's leading legal directories. The role presents a fantastic opportunity to join a team who work in an increasing number of jurisdictions throughout the region on behalf of a diverse regional and international client base.

Leading specialists in their field, focusing on contentious and non-contentious marine, international trade and transport law work. The work spans various sectors including marine, aviation, commodities, insurance, and energy. The focus of this role is contentious.

The successful applicant will be advising legal counsel, senior executives and their companies' insurers on challenging and often high-profile matters, both domestically and internationally.

We are open to hearing from people with extensive complex commercial litigation experience. The size of some of the litigious matters means that you will be heavily involved in a 'national team' environment and therefore sharing of knowledge, team inclusion, accountability and a track record of success as a team player are key requirements.

Key responsibilities

  • Legal Expertise: Assisting the Partners and other team members on a range of complex and large-scale matters, including but not limited to:
    • Class actions, international trade, commodities, shipping, transportation, commercial agreements, court proceedings, domestic and international arbitration, marine insurance, and commercial disputes
  • Team Management: You will have experience delegating to junior staff and be willing to help partners and Special Counsel to manage the team and foster team work.
  • Client Management: You will be comfortable liaising directly with regional and global clients and that you will be able to build a trusted adviser relationship. We will support you to be actively involved in business development work.
  • Supervising Discovery: Superior skills related to managing e-discovery and electronic data collection in the context of large, complex litigation. You will oversee large scale doc review to elicit key information, and effectively train juniors and guide processes.
  • Communication: Clear and effective communication is essential, both in conveying legal advice to clients and in negotiating with opposing parties.

Candidate profile

  • Suitable candidates will be Australian or dual qualified and have experience gained in an international or leading national firm.
  • Candidates will have minimum 5 years' post qualification experience.
  • Proven experience working on litigation matters within the Supreme and Federal Courts, and a commitment to technical excellence.
  • Class action experience and ideally marine, international trade and/or transport experience, though that isn't essential.
  • Proven capability managing e-discovery and electronic data collection in the context of large, complex litigation.
  • Ability to juggle a range of tasks and prioritise effectively to role model and instill similar work habits in more junior team members.
  • Clear commercial understanding and outcome driven approach with a desire to deliver the highest quality service and advice to leading international clients.
  • Pro-active critical and problem-solving skills to not only support the team's work but to also find creative new solutions.
  • Strong technical legal skills and exceptional service delivery to provide timely responses to internal/external clients.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team with varying levels of responsibility and supervision depending upon the matter.
  • A keen interest in the development of yourself and those less senior as lawyers, and confidence to assist the team to develop client relationships.
  • The desire to work on challenging matters and thrive in a high performing team environment.
