Job description

The Garvan Research Foundation was founded in 1981 and is the fundraising and marketing arm of the Institute, raising awareness and vital funds from individuals, trusts and foundations and corporate and community groups.The Foundation’s income has grown from a fundraising base of $110,000 in its first year to more than $47 million in 2023 – approximately half of the Institute’s total income. The remarkable success of the Foundation’s activities is having a catalytic impact on our researchers’ ability to make scientific contributions that will ultimately lead to earlier diagnosis, better treatments and prevention or cure of a range of diseases.THE OPPORTUNITYThe Senior Communications Coordinator will work in the Marketing and Communications team to raise awareness of the Garvan Institute’s impact on the community and will support internal communications channels. This role reports to the Senior Communications Officer in the Communications stream, within the broader Marketing and Communications team. A good communicator with excellent writing skills who is passionate about medical research will enjoy this role.Salary: Up to $78,000 + 11% super + salary packaging (depending on experience)Employment Type: Full time permanentSNAPSHOT OF BENEFITSGenerous salary packaging to save you income tax on your wages thereby boosting your monthly take home pay (max. $15,900 general expenses + $2,650 meals/accom)Ample opportunities for on-going training and developmentStimulating, diverse and highly international research environmentFlexible work arrangements e.g. start / finish times18 weeks paid parental leave for both parents including paid superannuationA range of additional leave types to meet your personal needs including cultural leave, conference leave, community service and study leaveDiscounted Health InsuranceLifestyle discounts with our community partnersWHAT YOU WILL DOThe key responsibilities include:Working with patient advocates and donors to identify opportunities for stories to promote Garvan’s research that will resonate with and engage public audiencesWriting articles and creating content to communicate Garvan’s current and potential impact on the communityCreating or repurposing existing content into written collateral for channels such as the Garvan ‘Our stories’ webpage, annual report and Breakthrough newsletters to donorsMaintain a high standard of written communication, ensuring accuracy, clarity and consistencyWorking with Foundation teams and Institute researchers to develop and update content for Garvan’s internal channels, including the internal newsletter and Slack channelTriaging of shared email inboxABOUT YOUThe key skills and experience include:Tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism, marketing, or equivalent experienceStrong writing skills and experience in producing a range of material for various external audiences and across traditional and digital channelsAbility to effectively communicate with co-workers, members of the public, donors, management and other stakeholdersAn eye for detail and ability to meet strict deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracyExcellent time management skillsAbility to work well independently and cooperatively in a teamExperience or interest in medical science is highly advantageousABOUT GARVANThe Garvan Institute of Medical Research is an independent Medical Research Institute (MRI) in Sydney, delivering scientific and clinical impact on a global basis and in partnership with organisations that share our vision.
