Job description

Did you know?

As Australia’s national policing agency, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) remit is expanding and evolving quickly to address the criminal threats of today and tomorrow. Crimes we fight know no borders and we are needing to be more agile than ever before. In such a dynamic environment, we are looking to bolster our marketing communications capability within the agency.

The ability to use available marketing insights and translate these into effective communications solutions in a rapidly changing operating environment are fundamental to the agency’s success.

The AFP offers generous remuneration and conditions including:

  • Six weeks (30 days) of paid annual leave per year + additional paid Christmas stand down
  • 4 extra mandatory leave rest days per year
  • 18 days of paid personal leave per year
  • Generous superannuation of 15.4%
  • 16 weeks of paid maternity leave (after 12 months of service) + an additional 36 weeks of maternity leave without pay
  • Generous salaries and incremental salary progression governed by the AFP Enterprise Agreement
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangement that provides work/life balance
  • Health & wellbeing services – with a focus on early intervention, education and prevention
  • Access to ongoing training and professional development opportunities

What is the role?

The Communications and Customs Branch is looking for motivated and innovative thinkers who are passionate about communications and want to contribute and help raise awareness, drive behavioural change and support the business objectives of the AFP.

You are a self-motivated, naturally curious, proud marketing communications practitioner who is passionate about achieving positive outcomes. Working collaboratively comes naturally to you and you understand the positive impact that can be achieved by tapping into the diversity and skillsets of others. You also have the ability to work autonomously and remain output-focused.

You will have:

  • A degree or higher education in marketing communications, public relations and/or related field and/or experience relevant to the role.
  • A good understanding of the marketing communications channel landscape and the ability to keep up with modern digital channels available and their impact.
  • The ability to cultivate positive relationships across diverse stakeholder groups, often in periods of volatility and change.
  • Experience in developing comprehensive strategies and detailed plans for change, communications and engagement in collaboration with partners and team members.
  • Practical experience in marketing communications and/or a related field.

Given the expanding remit and increased responsibility of the AFP, as part of the centralised communications capability, you will be exposed to various portfolios and business areas. As such, the ability to provide advice with agency priorities, operational outcomes, political sensitivities, geo-political pressures and the need to embrace new technologies and achieve greater corporate efficiencies in mind is highly desirable. In some circumstances, this may include securing Negative Vetting 2 clearance.

Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills will serve you well in this role as you adapt quickly to changes in priorities and direction.

You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

The Communications & Customs branch of the AFP is part of the Chief of Staff portfolio. The communications capability within the branch consists of 3 distinct functions, including:

  • Marketing Communications - To make the AFP a trusted, reputable household name and a law enforcement employer of choice.
  • Corporate Communications - Enabling areas such as graphic design, production, digital engagement and enterprise (internal) communication.

As part of the Communications & Customs branch you will play a pivotal role in contributing to a positive workplace culture through collaboration with colleagues, maintaining a results focus for broader team success, and respecting and valuing the different perspectives and talents of colleagues, and internal and external stakeholders.

Senior Communications Officers are embedded throughout these 3 distinct functions. While speciality requirements do exist for certain roles (and Band levels), these roles are generally responsible for:

  • Effectively triaging and scoping incoming requests from business line areas to ensure resourcing is applied accordingly.
  • Driving engaging, innovative and effective outputs across the marketing communications discipline including communications strategy and plan development, implementation and evaluation (internal and/or external focused), campaign and event delivery (including recruitment/attraction efforts).
  • Working with in-house creative team and external agencies to develop quality outputs (can include digital marketing assets, social media, traditional advertising and internal communications).
  • The ability to source and analyse marketing intelligence and to segment target audiences to inform your approach.
  • Translating technical language into straightforward, comprehensible and engaging content.
  • Actively contributing to the marketing communications capability uplift at the agency.
  • Coaching and supporting team structures and individuals to help build resilience, capacity and capability, and developing and help lead a team to encourage innovation and results in a timely fashion.

Essential Requirements

  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an NV1 security clearance, with the option to progress to an NV2 if required.
