THE ROLE 

The Senior Contracts Specialist works closely with the Commercial Manager and is responsible for managing all aspects of commercial contracts, including contract compliance, customer relationship management, negotiation and strategy development for contract extensions and establishment of new contracts. 

The Senior Contracts Specialist will manage key commercial relationships for the Australian business and be accountable for maintaining and developing systems and procedures to ensure compliance with contracts.  The Senior Contracts Specialist also monitors regulatory developments and makes recommendations accordingly to ensure compliance and value optimisation for the business.

This role will have a broad internal customer base across TransAlta’s Australian assets, current and future.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES 

  • Work with the Commercial Manager to develop contracting strategies for major customer supply agreements such as Power Purchase Agreements.
  • Manage contract negotiations and due diligence processes with new customers, vendors, and partners leading to executed agreements.
  • Manage key commercial contracts, including Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) and Joint Venture (JV) agreements to ensure compliance with contract obligations including invoicing and reporting obligations.
  • Respond to customer queries and develop customer relationships for key contracts.
  • Develop and coordinate analysis to support contractual decisions and optimize long-term value, including preparation of business cases, reports and recommendations for senior management.
  • Assist with the development of medium- and long-term business plans and budgets, including assumptions driving these deliverables.
  • Identify and mitigate key commercial and regulatory risks.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with the Renewable Energy Target and NGERs schemes, including Safeguard.
  • Monitor regulatory activity relevant for our Western Australian assets, such as proposed changes to the market rules in the Wholesale Electricity Market and the Pilbara Market, identifying risks and opportunities, delivering robust analysis of changes and likely business impacts and recommending actions to optimise value for the business.
  • Represent TransAlta’s interests with external stakeholders including regulators, auditors and customers via participation in industry working groups and regular customer meetings.

ABOUT YOU 

  • University degree in commerce, law, business, engineering or other related discipline.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a commercial, regulatory or legal related role. 
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the electricity sector, with demonstrated experience in management and negotiation of power purchase agreements and related contracts.
  • Demonstrated capability to understand and manage risk effectively, balancing short and long-term business requirements.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills with a record of meeting deadlines.
  • Proficient in core office programs (i.e.: MS office) and capable of learning key position specific applications.
