A full-time permanent role has become available for an experienced Senior Corporate Lawyer to join our collaborative Customer Markets (Retail) team at AGL. Internally referred to as Senior Corporate Lawyer – Customer Markets, you will help AGL achieve its strategic objectives and manage legal risk through the provision of legal services and advice to the Customer Markets business unit.
You will work closely with and influence a diverse range of stakeholders across the Customer Markets business unit. You will provide considered, sound and strategic advice on a broad range of legal matters, including energy, competition and consumer law, privacy related obligations as well as the negotiation of significant commercial contracts.
This role is flexible and can be based in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide or Perth.
What you’ll be doing
Reporting to the Group Counsel – Customer Markets, you will:
Assist the Group Counsel as required to ensure that the Customer Markets Legal Team operates efficiently and with strategic impact
Provide legal support for Customer Markets matters, including sales and marketing campaigns, product development and innovation, digital adoption initiatives and transformation projects
Draft and negotiate a range of complex commercial contracts
Act for AGL in transactional work, regulatory investigations, and other initiatives
Provide regular training and guidance to business unit teams to foster a culture of compliance while supporting rapid innovation
Build relationships with stakeholders from within the business and identify areas for continuous improvement within the Legal Team
Provide relevant, strategic and actionable advice to the business, on corporate and commercial law and regulatory aspects of various transactions (and assist in relation to litigation and disputes in respect of the same)
Maintain independence and strong relationships and influence in order to protect AGL’s legal position and help the enterprise achieve its objectives and to ensure a strong compliance culture
Manage the procurement of external advice from our panel law firms where required
Develop and maintain an understanding of the regulatory landscape that the designated business units operate in as well as advising on the legal implications of legislative and policy changes
About You
Relevant top tier and in house experience for a senior legal role supporting a customer facing business in a regulated and competitive sector (PQE 8 years minimum)
Relevant experience in private practice and in-house legal roles in areas of law including competition and consumer law, privacy law, contracts and energy regulation would be looked upon favourably
Ability to lead business change in response to changes in the regulatory environment
Ability to prioritise and work to tight deadlines
Ability to represent AGL effectively in important commercial negotiations
Ability and desire to extend expertise in legal areas of specialisation relevant to the role such as competition and consumer law, privacy law, and retail energy regulation
Outstanding written and oral communication skills
Bachelor of Laws / Juris Doctor degree and admitted to practice in Australia
