Specialising in assisting women affected by Domestic and Family Violence, CAWLS adopts a holistic and culturally safe approach, offering services such as law reform, legal representation, client support, financial counselling, and community legal education.

Join a supportive legal team of multicultural women from all across Australia who are dedicated to the mission of CAWLS to enable, educate, and empower women in navigating the legal system, and ensure the respect and consideration of women's rights.

The Opportunity

CAWLS presents a compelling opportunity for a female-identifying Criminal Lawyer on a full-time 2-year fixed-term contract (with the potential for extension based on funding and program outcomes) Monday to Friday (8:30 am - 5:00 pm), stationed in Alice Springs, NT.

Reporting to the Senior Management team, the Senior Criminal Lawyer will play a crucial role in providing high-quality criminal legal advice and representation within the organisation's areas of practice and guidelines. You will also demonstrate leadership in gender-responsive and feminist lawyering by providing CPD to other CAWLS lawyers and ensuring legal services align with the Centre's practice modes, organisational priorities, professional responsibilities, and funding obligations.

Some responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of the law practice and its systems
  • Representing clients in the local court and providing duty lawyer services
  • Contributing to community legal education resources and presentations
  • Developing networks with relevant community-based organisations
  • Participating in policy and law reform activities
  • Other duties as delegated by the Senior Management team

Why Female-Identifying?

Our work at CAWLS is deeply rooted in addressing issues specifically affecting women, and your role will directly involve empowering women and girls in legal matters. This requirement is consistent with the exemptions under the Australian Sex Discrimination Act, where gender can be a genuine occupational qualification, particularly for roles involving empowerment and support of a specific gender (Sections 30 to 43). Additionally, this position aligns with the Act's provisions for 'special measures,' which support affirmative action for women in employment and employment advertising as part of legitimate affirmative action programs.

About You

To qualify, you will have completed a Bachelor of Law degree and be eligible for a Practising Certificate in the Northern Territory. In addition, you will have a minimum of 4 years experience in Criminal Law along with demonstrated managerial experience. A background in women's legal services, with experience in domestic and family violence, is preferred.

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Have an Ochre card, or the ability to obtain one
  • Hold a current police check
  • Hold a current NT Driver's Licence, or the ability to obtain one

Driven and genuinely committed to CAWLS's vision of a community free from violence and abuse, you will be an adaptable team player who enjoys working in a team environment as well as independently.

You will be comfortable working collaboratively with professionals across different disciplines both internally and externally to provide a holistic, trauma-informed, and wrap-around service to clients.

As our Senior Criminal Lawyer, you will be a beacon of change in the lives of women affected by systemic disadvantage and/or experience of domestic, family, and sexual violence.

Interested in this position, but you may be underqualified? CAWLS is also hiring a Junior Criminal Lawyer! (https://applynow.net.au/jobs/261579)

About the Benefits

You will receive a salary of circa $105,000 - $127,000 plus superannuation (commensurate with experience), along with a great host of benefits, including:

  • Relocation assistance of up to $3,000 to make Alice Springs your new home
  • Six weeks annual leave + additional 12 days personal leave
  • Salary Sacrificing options
  • A supportive work environment with plenty of on-the-job training
  • Paid professional development opportunities

This is a unique and enriching opportunity to use your skills to support the women in Central Australia. You'll be able to see the direct impact your work has on clients and the remote communities that CAWLS supports.

The position is subject to satisfactory completion of a 6-month probationary period.

If you're looking for the chance to bring your skills to a passionate not-for-profit organisation, that's supporting the women who need it most, don't wait - Apply Now.
