As a Senior Detention Youth Worker, you will work as part of a dynamic operational team to provide professional development and mentoring support to Detention Youth Workers, while also undertaking direct care and management responsibilities for young people.
In your role, you will work in close consultation with Section Supervisors to support the safe and effective operations of the youth detention centre. You will also work in support of the Shift Supervisors and Unit Managers.
The Senior Detention Youth Worker is part of the 1:4 staff to young person ratio.

The Senior Detention Youth Worker key responsibilities are:

• Undertake the key responsibilities of the Detention Youth Worker role
• Supervise and manage the provision of quality and professional interactions between Detention Youth Workers and young people in youth detention.
• Actively promote and monitor a high standard of safety and security within the centre and coordinate emergency and incidents responses as required and as per policies and procedures.
• Meet the safety, wellbeing and rehabilitation needs of young people by applying knowledge of appropriate behaviours and the developmental needs of adolescents.
• Lead, role model and promote positive workplace behaviour in the youth detention operational context, including proactive resolution of issues through established mechanisms.
• Play a key role in supporting operational staff through their induction program and Youth Worker probation and progression requirements. Provide formal performance reports as required.
• Provide ongoing professional development support to Detention Youth Workers through on-the-job mentoring, feedback and coaching, in consultation with Section Supervisors, Shift Supervisors and Unit Managers. Contribute to individual performance assessments as required.
• Support the Section Supervisor to develop and maintain consistent unit operations through the development of avenues for accurate, timely, and relevant information sharing and teamwork strategies.
• Demonstrate cultural capability and communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and understand the cultures and issues which impact them in today's society.
