SENIOR EMERGENCY MEDICINE REGISTRARS|ACT

Our client based in ACT is currently seeking Senior Emergency Medicine Registrars to join their team.

THE POSITION:

Our client who is based in ACT are seeking Senior Emergency Medicine Registrars to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to apply medical knowledge and experience in the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of patients who present to the emergency department.

THE HOSPITAL:

The Hospital is a 672 bed facility catering to a population of around 550,000.  It provides acute, sub acute, primary and community-based health services to the ACT and surrounding region.

The Emergency Department sees over 90,000 patients per annum with approximately 20% paediatric age group.  The department has a diverse and interesting case mix with high trauma load due to its role as the only trauma centre within the catchment area.

The department is accredited for 24 months of advanced training in emergency medicine with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, including accreditation for the paediatric requirement. 

There are accredited rotations available in anaesthetics, intensive care, medicine, neonatal intensive care, paediatrics and to emergency rotations at an urban district hospital.

There are special skills terms available in Medical Education, and opportunities for appointments in Retrieval Medicine. We have a good working relationship with peripheral and regional hospitals, with opportunities to rotate to these areas to fulfill college requirements. Rotations can be arranged to other areas as required.

There is a comprehensive training program for both the primary and fellowship curricula which all College trainees are able to attend. Specific support for exam preparation for both the primary and fellowship examinations is available. There is also the opportunity to engage in research activities for both personal interest and to fulfil College requirements.

All registrars are part of a 24-hour roster, covering seven days a week. They are expected to provide direct patient care, supervise junior medical staff and to work under the supervision of consultant staff. Development of skills in specific areas such as airway management, ultrasound, trauma, toxicology and other invasive procedures are supported and encouraged. There may also be opportunity for registrars with the requisite skills, to be fractionally appointed to the Capital Region Retrieval Service (CRRS).

Registrars also interested in teaching are able to be involved in the teaching of medical students for the ANU Medical School program.

There are opportunities for Senior Registrars to be involved in administrative and leadership aspects of Emergency Medicine with a view to transitioning from trainee to fellow. The Senior registrar position acts as an important liaison role between the junior trainee group and Consultant group.

The Emergency Department at offers a unique, wide-ranging and exciting experience rarely available in a single hospital.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, ACTIVITIES, AND DUTIES:

  • Be responsible for immediate patient care including adequate history taking, physical examination, ongoing continuous review of patient condition and progress, investigations and therapy indicated by unit protocol or as directed by the duty specialist. Determine and facilitate disposition of patient, with guidance from senior clinicians if required.
  • Perform specialised procedures at the direction and under supervision of the duty specialist.
  • Prepare material for our website/app, clinical presentations, teaching sessions and mortality/morbidity reviews as directed.
  • Develop and progress a project related to research, education or quality.
  • Participate in rostered duties as allocated, including clinical duties, and also roster writing, attendance at specialist meetings, participation in mentoring programs.
  • Provide leadership and promote a commitment to high quality customer service principles, practices, and attributes.
  • Take responsibility for supervising clinical duties of registrars, resident medical officers, and interns
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation, such as roster writing, quality initiatives, and preparing educational material for juniors.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be an advanced trainee in Emergency Medicine, preferably in the final year of advanced training.
  • Proficient computer literacy skills, as you will be responsible for completing clinical documentation in the DHR and using other CHS IT systems.
  • Fully registered or eligible for registration as a medical practitioner with APRHA.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to work a 24/7 rotating roster including weekends, nights and public holidays.
  • Evidence of involvement in continuing medical education.
  • Proven ability to apply theoretical knowledge and experience in determining the appropriate clinical diagnosis, investigations and treatment of patients.
  • Proven reliability in work within personal level of expertise and seeking assistance as needed from senior staff.
