Merchants Technology is part of the Payments Service Utility (PSU) which brings together the process, people and technology assets supporting cheques, bulk electronic payments, merchant acquiring (including terminal technology and ecommerce technology), high value and international payments processing for CBA. The team have the monumental task of ensuring that 40% of the Australian economy are able to transact over $90 billion a day using the Bank’s services in a reliable manner. With the payments technology systems being at the heart of the Bank, almost every customer-facing channel relies on payments services in one way or another.
As a Senior Integration Engineer, your typical day to day activities will be exciting and varied.
- You will interact with our merchant customers during presales activities to demonstrate and answer technical questions to influence their decision to onboard.
- You will lead each new merchant launch, including coordinating testing and certification, project managing the merchant team through their customisation and integration to ensure a positive and seamless customer experience.
- You will collaborate with stakeholders including L1 Technical Care team, Engineering, Product Owners, Merchant Technical Sales to share knowledge and training to improve the service offering and ways of working as we grow to operate at scale.
- You will share ideas and suggestions with the product team on new product features.
- You will resolve escalated technical support queries assisting client developers.
- You will maintain content on our developer hub which is our merchant facing developer portal.

You will be one of the early members of the team bringing this innovative platform to CommBank’s new and existing merchants, including our established customer base of over 15 million Australians.

This role reports to the Chapter Lead – Systems and Software Engineering within Merchants Technology Engineering.
We are seeking people who have:
- Excellent communication skills gained from prior technical consulting or presales roles with ability to explain complex technical information into something easy to understand
- Ideally have experience working in fintech or payment industry
- Experience assisting key merchants individually with their onboarding, while scaling our operations by authoring self-service technical documentation and developer resources
- An ability to contribute to a culture where quality, excellence and openness are championed
- The ability to think outside the box and break boundaries to solve complex problems
- Skills assisting with complex technical pre-sales, requirements discovery, troubleshooting, customisation and technical project management
- A natural drive to educate, communicate and positively influence a large stakeholder group
- A passion for coaching junior engineers, sharing knowledge and expertise to uplift and improve development practices
- Background in software engineering especially eCommerce/web development with proficiency in at least one programming language (ideally PHP or JavaScript)
- Solid understanding of end-to-end solution designing and programming in SOAP and/or Restful API
- Experienced working with eCommerce plugins such as Magento, WooCommerce and mobile SDKs at a development or implementation level
- Knowledge in Web development framework such as React will be highly regarded
- Payment Industry knowledge of acquiring and card not present solutions.
- Detailed knowledge of customer transactional solutions, 3DSecure, hosted solutions, payment gateway processing and tokenisation
- Combined software development experience with SQL, HTML, JavaScript, Java, JSON and tools such as Postman
- Technical expertise and troubleshooting skills that could include explaining different types of user authentication, debugging a failing API call, or advising on a custom integration
- Desirable: knowledge of ERP and CRM systems and how they integrate to payment solutions
- Understanding of transactional banking and how this impacts customer’s payments operations (receivables, reconciliation, and automation)
