Senior Forensic Officer, Mental Health Review Tribunal

  • Employment Type: Full Time, Temporary (up until February 2025)
  • Location: Gladesville
  • 35 hour working week, in a hybrid working environment
About this role
The Senior Forensic Officer schedules, coordinates and supports Tribunal hearings for forensic patients by liaising with Tribunal members and parties to a hearing, providing information to clients and stakeholders and maintaining client files. The role supports the Tribunal in meeting its statutory obligations relating to the scheduling and conduct of forensic patient hearings and reviews under the Mental Health Act 2007 and the Mental Health and Cognitive Impairment Forensic Provisions 2020.
Crown Clerk Grade 5-6, salary from $93,295 - $102,941 p.a. (plus super and annual leave loading)

Where you'll be working
The Mental Health Review Tribunal is a specialist quasi-judicial body constituted under the Mental Health Act 2007. It has a wide range of powers that enable it to conduct mental health inquiries, make and review orders, and to hear some appeals, about the treatment and care of people living with a mental illness.
The Tribunal is based on the grounds of the Old Gladesville Hospital at Gladesville. It has a President, two full time and nine part time Deputy Presidents, a Registrar, 30 staff and approximately one hundred and thirty part time members.

The work of the Forensic Division
Most of the work of the Forensic Division of the Tribunal is to prepare hearings to review forensic patients who have been found by the Court to be not criminally responsible for an offence, or who have received a limiting term, or are unfit to be tried. The Forensic Division also prepares hearings to review patients who have been transferred from prison to hospital because they are mentally unwell, and to consider making community treatment orders for those in the prison population who may require mental health treatment. The Forensic Division has 10 staff across two teams. Each team is managed by a Principal Forensic Officer, who reports to the Forensic Team Leader. There are 5 Senior Forensic Officers in total.
Essential Requirements for this role:
  • High level understanding of forensic and mental health issues and mental health legislation and systems in NSW
  • High level organisational and time management skills and demonstrated ability to follow procedures and show attention to detail and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines in a high volume workplace
  • Well-developed office based computer and administrative skills including the ability to prepare correspondence, manage files and records as well as technical skills such as the operation of video conferencing and other hearing equipment
