About the team

The Fraud and Corruption Control Team is responsible for preventing, detecting, and investigating internal and external fraud related to the department. The team provides anti-corruption services and advice; and is a key liaison point for the department in relation to the National Anti-Corruption Commission. The team is a small but cohesive unit of qualified and highly skilled officers who are passionate about what they do.

Our ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated experience in receipt and assessment of fraud allegations.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting investigations particularly criminal investigations.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparation of a variety of reports identifying fraud risks and vulnerabilities and making recommendations to improve fraud controls.
  • A strong working knowledge of relevant policies and frameworks, the Commonwealth Fraud Control Framework, Australian Government Investigation Standards, and the ability to quickly digest and comply with departmental policies and procedures.
  • The ability to effectively liaise, negotiate, and communicate with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • The ability to be proactive and have a positive attitude towards continuous improvement and work collaboratively in a small team.
  • Demonstrated sound judgement and integrity.

What you will do

The Senior Fraud Assessment and Investigation Officer supports the Fraud Response Manager to assess and thoroughly investigate allegations of fraud and corruption against departmental staff and contractors, as well as recipients of services or benefits administered by the department. You will need to gain a knowledge of a diverse range of funding models, services and functions of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources. 

You will need to be able to clearly articulate, both verbally and in writing, to other members of the team and to the Fraud and Corruption Control Officer, a plan for timely resolution of allegations which have been received. It will be your role to support the Fraud Response Manager to determine if a matter is accepted for investigation or if other departmental actions are appropriate. 

The successful candidate will:

  • Complete Fraud Assessments and conduct investigations in line with Commonwealth and departmental requirements, including conducting interviews, collecting and presenting evidence as required to support criminal prosecutions.
  • Develop plans and strategies to achieve quality outcomes, and prepare concise and accurate investigation plans, evidence matrices, case assessment reports and stakeholder feedback reports.
  • Develop and maintain internal and external relationships, including with law enforcement agencies.
  • Provide advice on Fraud Assessmentsand Investigations.
  • Undertake all investigations and business in a professional manner.
  • Assess the outcome of individual investigations to identify and report on system, policy, and procedural control weaknesses.
  • Work collaboratively to achieve business outcomes and improve service quality within the Fraud and Corruption Control Team.
Eligibility

A Certificate IV in Government Investigations or the capacity to acquire this qualification through recognition of proven equivalent work experience and knowledge is required.

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
