The Cairns Jockey Club conducts 20 race meetings, including the major Red Beret Hotel Cairns Cup Carnival and Cairns Amateurs Race Weekend.
The Senior Groundsman is responsible for assisting the Track & Facilities Supervisor with the presentation, maintenance and continuous improvement of the racing and training surfaces, facilities and surrounds at the Cairns Jockey Club. They will work the facilities team to provide for a safe, attractive environment for all stakeholders, race day patrons and visitors in line with Racing QLD standards.
Reporting to the General Manager, the key duties will include:
- Ensure the preparation of a safe, efficient, and consistent racing and trial surface in accordance with Club and Industry standards
- Assist in the preparation of the tracks, grounds, and gardens at all CJC venues to present an attractive venue to patrons and contribute to their enjoyment of the facilities
- Ensure that all club facilities including the lawn, gardens, stall, stables & car parks are attractively presented at all times.
- Identify and undertake general maintenance and improvements to facilities as required.
- Set up club equipment including race day equipment as required and directed.
- Co-ordinate the clean-up of external facilities and grounds after race meetings.
- Maintain workshop including associated tools and equipment in a safe, secure, and clean manner giving due regard to legislative and WHS requirements.
- Perform regular mowing, edging, and trimming to keep the grounds neat and presentable
- Monitor and address pest and weed control as needed
- Prune and trim trees and shrubs to maintain healthy growth and prevent hazards
The successful candidate will have qualifications in an appropriate turf management discipline and considerable professional experience preferably in thoroughbred racing. Knowledge of all turf maintenance requirements and ability to operate required machinery and attend to general maintenance of buildings and facilities is required.
The remuneration package is negotiable dependent on qualifications and experience.
