Job description

LX is offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced and passionate Senior Industrial Designer to join our team.  We design, develop and manufacture unique products, from concept through to scale.

LX is a fast-paced design group that creates innovative products for clients globally, as well as developing our own range of IoT devices.

Our newly refurbished office is located in the Macquarie Park technology precinct.  The opportunity is to join our team of world class designers and engineers in creating award winning products for our diverse client base.

You will work in close collaboration with the larger design team (electronics hardware, embedded firmware, software, and user experience experts) supporting their talents and ensuring the delivery of high-quality design solutions.

You will take charge of projects from inception to completion, delivering compelling presentations and maintaining effective communication with both management, clients and team members.

LX is looking to continually evolve and look to all of our team members to develop and implement methods and processes to enhance team efficiency and competence levels.

We are looking for exceptional candidates that have:

  • At least five-years’ experience as a Senior Industrial Designer. Consultancy experience in consumer electronics is an advantage, as is experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Extensive experience designing complex electro-mechanical products involving electronics integration, injection moulding, metal components and in building these into complex assemblies that can be manufactured at scale.
  • A high level of autonomy, able to manage and run projects from concepts through to manufacture.
  • A high level of manufacturing knowledge in areas such as injection moulding, materials, assembly, CNC, and fabrication.
  • An ability to focus on relevant details, and ensure that the product definition is precise.
  • Able to communicate ideas succinctly using digital and hand drawn sketches.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Highly organised, able to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Able to understand concepts quickly.
  • A versatile and flexible approach
  • Resilience: able to withstand the inevitable buffeting that is encountered in a research and development environment, where unforeseen challenges arise frequently.

Reporting to the Head of Product Design, you will:

  • Be tasked to design new products, as well as amend existing products.
  • Understand the design constraints, target market, budget, timeframe and integration of hardware during the design brief/definition stage.
  • Conceptualise and ideate design directions and solutions through sketching / digital sketching and CAD modelling based on the client, customer or internal requirements.
  • Consider Ingress protection (IP), Impact Protection (IK), and appropriate materials for radio signals to pass uninhibited when designing product enclosures.
  • Understands and apply standards (such IEC 60601- Medical) in the development phase of products.
  • Produce/specify prototypes using prototyping technologies such as 3D printing, CNC machining, Vacuum Casting, as well as traditional model making techniques where appropriate.
  • design products for mass manufacturing processes, including injection moulding, CNC machining, and fabrication.
  • Create appropriate test procedures to validate product functionality and hypotheses, according to the client's requirements.
  • Create manufacturing packs with an appropriate level of detail to convey key manufacturing details and tolerances for mass production.
  • Manage suppliers both locally and internationally, including sourcing quotes, managing quality control, and managing timelines.

 What's on offer:

  • A salary commensurate with your experience, expertise and talents
  • The opportunity to have a real impact on the growth of the company globally
  • Work on a range of products sectors that will include medical devices, scientific equipment, agricultural IoT, global logistics and robotics
  • Work with a fun, passionate, talented team
  • Flexible hybrid, WFH / office-based work arrangement
  • Recently refurbished Macquarie Park offices, with parking and close to public transport
  • Please note that all successful applicants will be subject to a three-month probationary period.
