About the Role:
The Senior Legal Advisor will provide high-quality legal and policy services to the Commission. The role requires excellent legal analysis, policy and writing skills, and an ability to develop productive working relationships across government and with community stakeholders. Litigation and/or investigatory skills would be an advantage. The role reports to the Head of Legal.
Some of your duties will include:
- Providing authoritative legal and policy advice to the Commission on the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic), the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic), the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001(Vic) and the Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Act 2021 (Vic)
- Supporting the Commission's legal policy work, including writing reports, drafting submissions to public inquiries, and running consultation processes
- Developing and maintaining positive and productive relationships with key stakeholders. This includes acting as a representative of the Commission in a range of forums and organising and running capacity-building activities
About You:
As an ideal candidate, you will possess:
- Significant knowledge and/or specialist expertise or the ability to quickly acquire in providing strategic legal advice and litigation management on complex and time sensitive cases, in relation to discrimination, vilification, change or suppression practices and human rights law.
- Significant and relevant expertise or the ability to quickly acquire in providing authoritative legal advice in relation to in house government legal issues (including privacy, FOI, contracts, and administrative law).
- Significant and specialist expertise or the ability to quickly acquire in undertaking regulatory or other types of complex investigations or reviews.
- Must be a Barrister or a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria
