Job description

The Opportunity:

In the role of Senior Native Title Engagement Officer you will have responsibility for supporting the delivery of a range of services including governance assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations registered under the CATSI Act, in particular Prescribed Bodies Corporate (PBCs) and Registered Native Title Bodies Corporate (RNTBCs).

The role will include chairing and/or assisting at corporation meetings, management of complaints and disputes, and supporting activities such as registration of PBCs and reporting of RNTBCs.

As a Senior Engagement Officer, you will be required to engage in activities, lead and assist other staff to ensure PBCs and RNTBCs are compliant with the requirements of the CATSI Act and the Native Title Legislation. This applies to existing Corporations and those wishing to register.

Other requirements of the role may include:

  • travelling to attend, or present, at relevant meetings, conferences and forums
  • presenting training to staff and other agencies on Native Title or dispute resolution.

Our Ideal Candidate:

Our ideal candidate will ensure timely and quality responses to inquiries and complaints using ORIC’s business systems and processes. You must be able to provide information to Indigenous Corporations, their members and Common Law holders regarding complex matters under the CATSI Act and Native Title legislation.

You will also have experience in interpreting the CATSI Act and Native Title legislation to ensure corporations are complying with the legislations, policy, and regulatory frameworks. You will have the ability to deliver specialist training to assist the Indigenous Corporation with targeted governance and Native Title issues and be comfortable facilitating, observing and/or chairing meetings, representing ORIC in external forums and promoting the role of the registrar and the benefits of the CATSI Act.

You will need to identify opportunities to build PBC capability with skills and processes for managing future disputes and maximising positive outcomes and improved dispute management practices in the sector. Key to your success will be your ability to work collaboratively, forming positive relationships with key stakeholders, communities and corporations to identify the needs and strategies for improving the governance, compliance and sustainability of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations in the region.

Other requirements of the role will include:

  •  providing clear and consistent communication delegating responsibility, and guiding and developing people
  • developing quality assurance and governance procedures, practices, and frameworks
  • assessing, evaluating, and recommending opportunities that contribute to continuous business improvements for ORIC
  • ensuring ORIC services are coordinated, planned, and strategically linked to ORICs business objectives in order to maximise their impact and effectiveness.

The position requires the successful candidate to hold a full driver’s license without restrictions.

Having experience and/or qualifications in legal practice, Native Title, alternative dispute resolution, business administration or Certificate IV in training and Assessment would be advantageous.
